Erasmus experience in Delft, The Netherlands

How's the country's food?

Honestly I had some difficulty in adapting to the food. In relation to Portugal, the prices aren't that much more expensive but it's an inferior quality, except maybe the vegetables.

The typical Dutch person has half an hour for lunch and will eat something light, like a sandwich. Dinner is around 6 in the evening and it's a heavier meal. Students usually eat whenever suits them!

How did you find accommodation?

I found a room through http://www.kamernet.nl.

How are the accommodation prices? And the prices in general?

The prices vary between €300 and €500. I paid €385 for an enormous, furnished room, and shared the house with only one other person. It was a good deal but it was done in person, and I was sub-renting it. The biggest "company" that rents rooms is the DUWO. I heard that it has higher prices, but it always has rooms.

What's the language like? Did you attend a language course at the university?

The language is incomprehensible! But you don't need to know Dutch because everyone speaks English!

What is the cheapest way to get to Delft from your city?

Plane.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Delft?

On Tuesdays in Bebop there are Jazz nights and on Wednesdays in De Ruif there's an International Night. During the rest of the week there are other good places but I like Ruif most.

And eating out in Delft? Can you name your favourite places?

Normally I ate at home but there are lots of nice pizzerias and the prices are good.

And in terms of cultural visits?

Churches, museums and parks. There are so many things to see as a tourist in Delft. At the Tourist Office you can get a free magazine that has cultural information and a map of the city centre on the final page!

Do you have any advice you'd like to give future students in Delft?

Be prepared because it rains the whole time and it can be depressing, particularly if you come from the South of Europe. Start looking for a room and a bike as soon as you get there, or even before you arrive!
