Experience in Delft, Netherlands by Rutger
What is it like to live in Delft? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Delft is a beautiful, small city with two sides. One side is the historical significance of the city, which encompasses famous painters and monarchs. The other side is the student side, due to the presence of the Technical University of Delft directly south of the city center.
What is the student lifestyle like in Delft?
Try getting in touch with local student organizations to get a feel for the real Delft student life. Most of the time, parties or events are being organized and they can be a great opportunity to sample the unique Dutch student culture.
How much does it cost to live in Delft?
A room in a house with a shared kitchen/bathroom etc. will cost between 250-400 euro, depending on the location and facilities.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Delft? Is there any advice you can give?
Delft has a major housing shortage and as such, rooms are hard to come by. The best way to get a room is to find a way into the social networks of students already living there. Many rooms are secured through word-of-mouth, without ever posting a listing online.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Dutch food is all about quick, fast, easy energy. That basically means everything contains potato.
What places would you recommend visiting in Delft?
The city center is great for a lovely walk along the canals. To the east, a forest called the Delftse Hout provides some nice nature views. To the south, the campus of the TU Delft is freely accessible and is a must-see for any visitor.
Is it good to eat out in Delft? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Delft has a great variety of restaurants ranging from budget to expensive.
Is the nightlife good in Delft? Where is good to go?
Nightlife in Delft is mostly limited to cafes. There are some bars/clubs where people dance, but I would not recommend them. Try doing your own pub crawl, there are loads of great places. I recommend Doerak or De Ruif nearby.
What advice would you give future students heading to Delft?
Dutch people are hard to make friends with, as social circles are frequently rather closed. A good way to connect with people is over a beer, as that's generally what people do on an afternoon.
