Erasmus Experience in Delft, Netherlands by Syed Shamsil
Why did you choose to go to Delft, Netherlands?
I have choose to go to Delft because TU Delft is one of the best University for Coastal Engineering and Research.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The Scholarship is for 2 Years and the amount is 1000 Euro/month for living costs.
What is the student lifestyle like in Delft?
As TU Delft is really got all those intensive modules which requires a lot of time studying but beside that there's lots of Bars, Cafe in Delft where one can hang out in free time. Apart from from that Delft is close to Major cities of Netherlands eg. Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Den Haag so one can easily visit those place and lot of exciting stuff are to explore.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Delft to other students?
Yes I would certainly recommend the TU Delft and the city.
What is the food like?
The foods are generally good and have lot of variation like typical Dutch, Chinese, Indian, Swedish etc.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Delft?
For me it didn't cost anything I guess I was lucky and rented private accommodation. But during semester time it's difficult to find accommodation and University accommodation (eg. DUWO) cost money for registration.
How much does it cost to live in Delft?
I think it varies with person to person but the basic living requirement are not that expensive. But public transport (eg. Bus, Tram, Train) are expensive. Its best to use bike and also easy walking as the landscape is flat.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I would say its not easy to learn the language but TU Delft offers free course for international students
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Delft from your city?
The easiest and economical is bike and also walking as the city is really small.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Delft?
There's lot of bars like Bier Fabriek, De Wijnhaven, De bonte os etc.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Delft?
Cafe de Oude Jan, Plan B, Cafe de Beierd etc
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Nieuwe Kerk, Oude Kerk, Delft City Hall (Stadhuis), Prinsenhof Museum etc.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Delft in the future?
Its really a nice, quite and small student city but lot of intensive work for students but also you can enjoy your time. One can use bike everywhere so its best if you buy bike and in Netherlands they have dedicated bike lens all over the country so it would be wise.
