My Erasmus Experience in Copenhagen, Denmark - by Mara
Why did you choose to go to Copenhagen, Denmark?
Because it was somewhere a bit different. I wanted to discover new places people who had given me recommendations didn't know about, and find out more for myself.
How long did your exchange last? How much were you paid?
Six months, and I received 900 euros a month. The prices in Copenhagen were very high though.
What's the student life like in Copenhagen?
There are loads of Erasmus students in Copenhagen, meaning that you meet lots of people in the same situation as you. The Danish students were very friendly to us all, there were loads of places for going out partying and lots of activities organised for students.
Would you recommend the city and University of Copenhagen to other students?
The student life, definitely, my experience was an incredible one and I'll always have fond memories of it. The only problem was the high cost of everything - you've got to know how to save and just spend what's absolutely necessary in order to live there.
What's Danish food like?
I didn't like Danish food, and the variety of what you can buy in the supermarkets is pretty limited: not many lactose products (forget yoghurt, for example), meat, fish...
Did you find it hard to find a place to live in Copenhagen?
It was pretty hard because there's a housing crisis going on there at the moment and there are a lot of scams about. My recommendation is to look for accommodation when you get there.
How expensive is living in Copenhagen?
In my case, I paid 500 euros a month in rent, 200 to 300 euros a month I spent on food, 30 euros on transport and 100 euros on other things.
How are you finding the language? Have you signed up to a language class at the university?
The language was difficult, but almost everyone there speaks English.
There were Danish classes at the university, but I'd have liked it if I'd had the option to choose another module instead.
What's the cheapest way of getting to Copenhagen from your home city?
By plane from Seville to Madrid or Barcelona, and then from there to Copenhagen.
What are the best places for partying in Copenhagen?
Studenthuset is the student's house in Copenhague. It's very well-known and has events on every day of the week, such as dance classes, meditation groups, games... as well as parties by night.
What about eating out in Copenhagen? What are your favourite places?
McDonalds, Burger King, kebabs, Chinese places... restaurants in Copenhagen are very expensive and there aren't any bars like we have in Spain.
What does Copenhagen have to offer in terms of culture?
The whole peninsula is full of culture, from north to south.
In Copenhagen the best sights are:
- The Siren
- The old city walls
- The Tivoli Gardens
- The library
- The opera house
- Nyhavn
Do you have any advice for future students coming to Copenhagen?
Save up as much money as you can to be able to enjoy your experience there, and visit as much as possible. You're going to love it!
