Itsass’s Erasmus Experience in Copenhagen, Denmark
Why did you choose to go to Copenhagen, Denmark?
For the education. I'm studying Primary Education for children with special needs and I think that the education system in Nordic countries is very good (or so we have always been told).
How long was your scholarship? How much money did you receive for support?
I received help for the five months that I am here, but 400 euros a month isn’t really enough to live off.
What’s the student lifestyle like in Copenhagen?
There isn’t much of a student atmosphere compared with other countries you can go to for your Erasmus year. There are lots of Danish students but Erasmus students are in a different neighbourhood. So it’s very difficult to get together and meet lots of people that are in the same situation as you.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Copenhagen to other students?
Of course, yes! I have only been here for two months but I am already in love with this country. I love that it’s really organised and I love how they invest money in it. Coming here in the second semester has been good too as there are more hours of sunlight. With regard to the university, it’s the university of my dreams. I would never have imagined such a university, I thought that they only existed on television… but they do exist! The lecturers are very prepared and they give us the opportunity to learn about the Danish way of life, which is good given what I study.
What’s the country’s food like?
We don't like it very much because a lot of things contain lots of spices. But here there is food from all over the world and we cook like we do at home. The only thing I miss is cured meat; )
Did you find it difficult to find accommodation in Copenhagen?
No. I found it through my university. I currently live in student accommodation in a village next-door to the uni. This village is mainly for Danish students. The only communal area we have to share is the kitchen. I really like it.
How much does it cost to live in Copenhagen?
A lot. Quite a lot more than in Spain but that is made clear before you enrol for the course here. More or less 1, 000 euros or so and that’s without counting the cost of accommodation.
How’s the language? Did you go on a course at the university?
I know very basic Danish, just enough to get by in life: thank you, hello, goodbye, good morning, a beer please…
What’s the cheapest way for you to get to Copenhagen from your hometown?
Flying.
Which places do you recommend for nightlife in Copenhagen?
The university bar, Australian Bar, Miami Bar, District…
What about sightseeing?
It is all very beautiful. Above all, I recommend doing the Free Walking Tour which also has a Spanish option and you can also choose the places that you want to go to: the Botanical Garden, the castles, foodMarket, the beaches, Christiania, etc.
Do you have any advice for future students in Copenhagen?
Make sure you save money before you go as we often go over budget without realising.
