Erasmus Experience in Copenhagen, Denmark by Nieves

Why did you choose to go to Copenhagen, Denmark?

I didn't choose it per-say, basically I was offered me a job in Tourspain in Copenhagen, I said yes but there weren't many country options.

How long is the placement? How much money do you receive to help with living costs?

It's six months and I receive a total of 1. 500 euros grant money, which for living costs in this city, isn't that much.

What is the student lifestyle like in Copenhagen?

As like anywhere, you have to try and make your own scene, but there tons of Facebook pages available to socialise and meet others.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Copenhagen to other students?

I didn't study at the University as I was doing a placement for my Masters, but yes I absolutely recommend it. I know plenty of students and they are very happy. Also, the government has an agreement with the foreign students in that they can apply for a grant of up to 700 euros a month if they work at least 10 hours a week somewhere.

What's the food like?

I don't like it haha! Spanish food is the best. Lots of salmon and herring.

Was it difficult to find somewhere to live?

Yes. Without a doubt it's main problem of coming here. I know people that have also had to come earlier than anticipated as they didn't find anywhere at a good price. There's a big demand for flats and there's little available. It's a big problem.

How much is it to live in Copenhagen?

Life here is a lot more expensive than in Spain but you also need to know the best places to live and to visit. For example, there are supermarkets which are much cheaper than others and when I say a lot, I mean that you can find the same product for nearly half the price. I'm earning around 1000 euros a month: 500 euros alone goes towards rent for my room.

What's the language like? Are there any language courses available at the University?

There are free courses available to learn Danish and English too, so I suppose you can find similar courses in the University as well.

What's the cheapest way to get to Copenhagen from your hometown?

By plane. The prices depend on the time of year obviously, but I reckon it's the best option.

Where do you recommend for a night out in Copenhagen?

There are plenty of pubs in the centre and not only for the weekend. I usually go out on Tuesdays to a place called "Tequila Bar" and it's great because they give out free beer on Tuesdays between 9 and 10 pm and people end up playing beer pong! You'll not be bored! :)

And what about eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants?

"Street Food" without a doubt. It's an industrial unit with sea views, inside which there are plenty of small restaurants with typical food from different countries. It's perfect for when people fancy different things.

Any good cultural sites to visit?

Museums, the famous Little Mermaid statue, the cathedral... the usual.

Any advice for future students going to Copenhagen?

You should always carry a raincoat in your bag whenever you go out, and here they don't have blinds or anything so a sleep mask is essential!
