Erasmus Experience in Copenhagen, Denmark by Max
Why did you choose to go to Copenhagen, Denmark?
I knew that it is one of the trendiest cities around and would be a perfect place to study for my course, advertising. There's always something creative going on here so you are never short of sources of inspiration.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I don't have a scholarship but I got an extra grant as the living costs are high here. Without it, one would struggle to live here.
What is the student lifestyle like in Copenhagen?
Student life here is great. You get discounts on various things such as cinema tickets, galleries etc.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Copenhagen to other students?
I go to DMJX and I would certainly recommend it to anyone. The city aswell is brilliant.
What is the food like?
The quality of food here is a lot higher than that of the UK. Admittedly, it is more expensive but I'd say it's worth it.
Eating out is also pretty expensive but it's the same in most cities.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Copenhagen?
Cost a lot of time and effort to find a place. It can also cost money if you have to buy a subscription for housing websites.
How much does it cost to live in Copenhagen?
Rent is going up every year as the demand for housing is increasing. Think on average between the people I know here, one would pay around 450-500 pounds a month for rent. I spend around 100 pounds a week minimum on other things.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
No, Danish is incredibly hard to understand but everyone is fluent in English so its fine. Yes there are many danish courses you can take. They do a free one at my school for internationals.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Copenhagen?
Meat packing district or there's lots of bars in Nørrebro.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Copenhagen?
There's restaurants everywhere and are all pretty good.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
- Cristiania
- Nyhavn
- Palaces
- Little Mermaid
- Danish Design Museum
- Tivoli
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Copenhagen?
Make sure you have money. Get out and go places, you can always find something to do. Don't stress if you can't find a place to live before getting here, like i and all my mates did. You talk to people here and you will find a place pretty quickly. Also use airbnb to find a place. Don't pay a deposit for a place until you arrive in Copenhagen and see the place first. There's many scammers.
