Erasmus Experience in Copenhagen, Denmark by Marie
Why did you choose to go to Copenhagen, Denmark?
The Scandinavian way of living attracted me, the University has a high reputation and I wanted to study in English. I was eager to discover something different.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I stayed here 5 months and I only get 510 € in total.
What is the student lifestyle like in Copenhagen?
It's really pleasant! There are many places to party, clubs, bars with live music, Kollegiums. The city has a lot to offer, culture, food (especially the pastries, delicious! ), parks... The life is cool here, Danes are relaxed. Many young people live in the city and when the weather becomes better, everybody goes out to enjoy until sunset!
Teachers and administrative workers at the university are very helpful, the classes are given to small groups and you have to participate actively.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Copenhagen to other students?
Yes, absolutely! I love it!
What is the food like?
Danish food is healthy (very dark bread, fish, vegetables). But if you like Italian products (Parmesan, Italian ham, rucola,... ), these are really expensive here.
Meat and fish are expensive as well, so you have to find some tips to buy cheap things and look for discounts!
But Danish smorrebrod and Danish traditional food is enjoyable, it' really different than Belgian way of eating.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Copenhagen?
No, the University has a good service (housing foundation) to help students.
How much does it cost to live in Copenhagen?
A lot! But it's only for a few months... Less or more about 1000 €/month. The accommodation was 550 (in the center, Norrebro, really nice! ) and I spent more or less 500 to eat, party and enjoy a beer if I wanted (without exaggeration).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It's not easy to learn Danish and you don't really need to! Everybody speaks English here. But many of my friends attended Danish language courses, it was funny but neither necessary nor so useful because Danes answer in English if they don't understand your Danish, which is very likely.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Copenhagen from your city?
By plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Copenhagen?
The Meatpacking district, Mojo bar, Student house on Thursday (concerts), Zefside (happy hour, really cool! ) and Rust.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Copenhagen?
Aamanns for the smorrebrod, Mother for pizzas, Wascator and Stick'n'sushis.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Amalienborg, Little Mermaid, Christiania, Vor Frelsers Kirke (worth to go up! ), Kastellet (for a nice walk), Norrebro (antiquities, shopping, brunch:)), Istedgade, Pilestraede.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Copenhagen in the future?
Just...come! It's a beautiful city with a special art of living, really cool, fashionable and healthy.
