Erasmus Experience in Copenhagen, Denmark by Anna
Why did you choose to go to Copenhagen, Denmark?
I was interested in Scandinavian countries and their culture. I also wanted to go to a country where people speak very good English. Copenhagen business school had the right subjects for my course and it is a good college.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
About € 900 once-off payment Erasmus grant.
What is the student lifestyle like in Copenhagen?
Danish students tend to be quite professional and organized. The big parties happen mostly in the weekend.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Copenhagen to other students?
The city is absolutely amazing, I totally fell in love with it. There is always so much to do and so much to see. I went to Copenhagen Business School and I would definitely recommend it. It is very organized and there are always people ready to help you if you have any problems. The administration is very nice.
What is the food like?
I mostly cooked for myself at home. I tried a couple of Danish foods and they were nice. The canteen in CBS has great food options.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Copenhagen?
The accommodation is very hard to find and very expensive. Try to get accommodation recommended to you by the college. I ended up teaming up with some other incoming exchange students and renting an apartment off Airbnb. It was very expensive, about € 750 a month for a shared bedroom.
How much does it cost to live in Copenhagen?
Copenhagen is very expensive but manageable depending on your spending habits. In total including some extra trips to Stockholm, Berlin and Denmark of course, as well as quite a lot of partying I spent around € 6000 in 4 months. About half of that went for accommodation.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is hard but it is not necessary to learn it as everyone speaks perfect English. There is a weeklong course in CBS as well as a semester long subject that you can take.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Copenhagen from your city?
I don't know about the cheapest way to come to Copenhagen, but once you're there, I would recommend buying a bike. I personally didn’t get one as I lived very close to college and 30-40 mins walk from the city centre so I wouldn’t t use it much. There is also a very good transportation in Copenhagen including the metro and buses. I would recommend getting a rejsekort when you first arrive in Copenhagen. It is a card that you use to check in and out of the metro/bus/train. If you have it, it works out way cheaper to get around rather than getting a new ticket every time.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Copenhagen?
The city centre and meatpacking district have many options. In the city centre there are Chateau Motel, Hive (people tend to be quite young there), Penthouse and Arch (which is the hardest one to get in to and is meant to be the most exclusive but in reality is not that special). There is also culture box if you like techno/deep house and that kind of stuff. There are also a lot of bars many of which have a dance floor and a DJ around the city centre. The meatpacking district is more casual than the city centre. The music tends to be more electronic there. There are clubs like Bakken and KB18 there and especially my favorite club in Copenhagen, KB3. The clubs only open on Fridays and Saturdays and stay open until 4 or 8 a. m. depending on the club. On Tuesdays LA tequila bar is worth checking out. If you are going to study in CBS the college throws a party every Thursday.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Copenhagen?
Papiroen is nice. It offers street food from around the world at a reasonable price and has a very nice atmosphere.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Tivoli, the little mermaid and surrounding area, the opera house at night, the botanical gardens, the shopping street.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Copenhagen in the future?
Have great time and make the most of it it’s amazing. Also try to make as many friends as you can in the first weeks.
