Erasmus Experience in Copenhagen, Denmark by Amerigo
Why did you choose to go to Copenhagen, Denmark?
I am studying the environment and this is one of the best country where to do it in Europe, moreover the professors are well prepared and they care about you and your problems. In the end the welfare state in Denmark is amazing, therefore is pretty easy to study and live here.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The university is totally free. Then you can also apply for some grants, but just in some cases: if you work part-time and you are a student, if you are a student and you live alone. If you have the requirements is very convenient to apply for them (the university website is full of information).
What is the student lifestyle like in Copenhagen?
It depends on which faculty are you studying: in general you have a lot of hours of lesson and a lot of projects and groupworks. Do not be scared you have free time everyday and the situation is not stressing.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Copenhagen to other students?
Absolutely yes!
What is the food like?
Danish food is not the best, but is full of street food and resturants. Better is to cook by yourself
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Copenhagen?
Finding a place where to stay in Copenhagen is very difficult, two raccomandations: start to look for it since you decide to move and try to be in the city to control the rooms and apartments you book. There are a lot of colleges but they are very full. It is expensive to have a room or an apartment in Copenhagen, be prepared to it.
How much does it cost to live in Copenhagen?
The accomodation can be 400-800€, for the food it depends on you, but there are a lot of cheap supermakets. Expensive is also to go out and drink in the bars if you do not pay attention, I suggest the friday bars of the university to save some money sometimes. Practising sports is cheap most of the time.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Danish is a very difficult language, but Scandinavian and German is easier. There are a lot of Danish courses most of them free, look into the university website for them.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Copenhagen from your city?
By plane
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Copenhagen?
Meatpacking District is very cool for electronic music and Ok prices, but also in the city center is full of more "commercial" locals. Some Danish pub (Bodega) are very good too .
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Copenhagen?
Untill it will be open you MUST go to Papiroen, street food! Also good resturant, but expensive, all around the city, specially in the center, Vesterbro and Meatpacking.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Some historical towers, churches and castels in the city. Also some libraries are very interesting. If you want there is the zoo. Look for the "Kulturnatten" (Culture night) in October, amazing event you have to partecipate.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Copenhagen in the future?
Look for the accomodation since you think to move in Copenhagen, is very very very difficult to find a place (look at the KKIK website if you have enough time). Use the university website: it is full of information about living in Copenhagen.
