Experience in Chicago, United States by Terri
What is it like to live in Chicago? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
No. I would not recommend living in Chicago. There are some nice places but there are some really bad places. Unless you are a college student and spend most of the time at a university, stay home. Chicago has a high crime rate. Most of the city is not worth seeing. If you want to stay around the north of Chicago, the environment is better but it is also much more expensive.
What is the student lifestyle like in Chicago?
There are several big universities in Chicago: Rush, University of Illinois at Chicago, Depaul and University of Chicago. Even some more. Obviously, there are a lot of young people. The Chicago nightlife is unmatched. One thing I will say about Chicago--It is anything but dull.
How much does it cost to live in Chicago?
Like anything, that depends on where you live. If you're a student, you will get all kinds of student discounts. If you're military, you will get all kinds of military discounts. Chicago is quite diverse. It has many different types of neighborhoods. You can choose your cost.

I don't know. I never tried.

Chicago has restaurants and restaurants and restaurants. Because Chicago is so diverse, it has to have diverse restaurants. The food can be outstanding.
What places would you recommend visiting in Chicago?
Magnificent Mile. It is a long street with many, many popular stores. The most popular is "Water Tower."
Is it good to eat out in Chicago? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
The best restaurants are on the north side of Chicago.
Is the nightlife good in Chicago? Where is good to go?
Chicago has many lounges, jazz places, etc. For the most entertainment, I would walk along Rush street. But stay on the North side of Chicago, you will be satisfied.
What advice would you give future students heading to Chicago?
Stay away from the south side of Chicago--at least for the 1st month or so. Keep to the campus until you learn the "lay of the land." Then if you decide to venture out, "go forth young man."
