Experience in Castellón De la Plana, Spain by Rachel
What is it like to live in Castellón De la Plana? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I'm from Castellón so I know it very well. Castellón is a small city. This means that you can go on foot anywhere, or if it's far you can take the bus. The best is the weather and also the beach, and Valencia is an hour from Castellón, so it is close.
What is the student lifestyle like in Castellón De la Plana?
In the center there are some bars where students drink beers and then go to discos. Music in each disco is different, and, for example, in Wallaby's, there is a Erasmus party every Wednesday, and the type of music changes depending on the day. So, you can meet with your friends in the evening, drink some beers and then go to party (this is the lifestyle of a lot of students), and you can do it from Wednesday until Saturday!
How much does it cost to live in Castellón De la Plana?
The most common here is to share an apartment with other students and each one can pay around 200€ per month, with all expenses included. More than 300€ is a scam! In reference to food, there are many supermarkets. The cheapest one are Mercadona (it is the most popular, and the best to buy alcohol), and Aldi. I'm not sure, but you can spend around 100€ per month buying food. A drink in a disco costs 6 or 7€, a shot 2 or 3€, but it depends on the disco or pub. And a beer in some bars just 1€, but it is more expensive in discos and pubs.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Castellón De la Plana? Is there any advice you can give?
No, it is not difficult, but people from Castellón usually don't speak English, so it is better if you can contact with a Spanish before coming here. He or she can help you. I have an advice: the best place to live is near of the train station or "El Corte Inglés", because it is close to the center and the tram stop to go to college. But never in the college zone because it is very far from all discos.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
You can eat all typical Spanish food, like paella, "tortilla de patatas", and also drink sangria, in any bar. McDonalds is very popular between students because it is cheap, and also "100 Montaditos" where each little sandwich costs 1€ on Monday and Sunday, and the beer costs also 1€.
What places would you recommend visiting in Castellón De la Plana?
In this point I have to note that Castellón is not a beautiful city with interesting history, but it is a bad example of architecture (and it is known around Spain for this). Honestly, the best is to visit Valencia and Barcelona.
Is it good to eat out in Castellón De la Plana? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
You can eat out in many good restaurants, but as you'll be an Erasmus student, the best places are "100 Montaditos", or some bars where sandwiches are cheap (and there are a lot! ) and sangria is good.
Is the nightlife good in Castellón De la Plana? Where is good to go?
As it is a small city, the nightlife is almost the same everyday, but you can go to different discos each night and listen the typical music that we listen in discos which we call "pachanga".
