More new things: Crumpets

On one of our first days of exploring the culinary secrets of this country, Katherine and I encountered some very curious small buns which here, they call crumpets.

What are they exactly? They are soft and spongy with many holes. They will measure about 7cm in diameter and have a height of more or less 2cm. According to the recipe, they're basically flour and yeast and look like this:

It would seem it's best to eat them hot, or so say the instructions which recommend putting them in the oven or toasting them... And this is just what we did.

I couldn't tell you what they taste like. They have a neutral taste, which means they work well with both sweet and savoury. As they were hot, we thought to top them with things that melt easily. As Katherine has more of a sweet tooth, I tried the first one with butter and cheese and it was great. The only bad thing is in being so porous, the melted butter seeped out the bottom and I lost it, hahaha.

We bought them this morning to have for pudding tonight. What a good idea!

As you can see, we topped them off with everything: ice cream (one chocolate, praline and caramel and the other, vanilla with small pieces of cookie dough. What better! ), honey, nocilla, condensed milk... Those in the flat were horrified to see us putting ice cream on them but on trying them, wanted another piece. Poof... This complaining without trying it. I can't stand it!

Every time someone came into the kitchen, they were surprised and ended up giving up; it being a lost cause... hehe. However we had a great time mixing and trying different tastes until we obtained the best one. For me, I believe I'll stick with the honey one... Although the chocolate ice cream one also had a lot to say for itself.

Traditionally, they are eaten for breakfast but we had them for pudding after dinner because they gave us a craving for sweets, hahaha. This isn't serious, but we like it like this more. :)

A very interesting discovery...

I say goodbye, licking my lips at how delicious they were.

Kisses,

Laura
