What is it like to live in Cairo? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Living in Cairo means that you constantly have to adapt! From the lack of side-walks and the really heavy traffic, to the excellent cuisine and scenery, Cairo is a city of contradiction and enjoyment.

What is the student lifestyle like in Cairo?

Get used to being late a lot!

How much does it cost to live in Cairo?

The rents are pretty expensive, the prices can easily be compared with European cities, maybe even more. Depending on your needs, be prepared to spend around 600 euros minimum per month.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Cairo? Is there any advice you can give?

It is not that difficult, you can publish a request in craigslist let's say, and the owners will contact you. Just make sure the apartment is in a good area, near (or in) Zamalek, Mohandesseen, Maadi (although is quite far) or Downtown.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is excellent, but for some is a little bit difficult to adapt to it in the first weeks. My advice is to avoid traditional food at the beginning, but after a short while, hit the street food! It's really cheap and tasty!

What places would you recommend visiting in Cairo?

The Islamic Cairo with its:

  • Bazar

  • The Coptic Cairo

  • The Saladin Citadel

  • Dahshour

  • Sakkara

And try to travel outside Cairo as much as possible.

Is it good to eat out in Cairo? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

I would recommend Zezo restaurant (زيزو-باب النص) for some really interesting dishes. Also, don't miss the koshary (some good places in Zamalek and Downtown).

For deserts, try the zalabya in 26th of July Street in Zamalek.

Is the nightlife good in Cairo? Where is good to go?

Honestly, the night life means more going out in relaxing places in the Bazar maybe and enjoying a cup of tea. For clubs, I could just recommend Cairo Jazz Club, but make sure to have a reservation before. And don't get too adventurous with clubs if you don't have Egyptian friends who know the place.

What advice would you give future students heading to Cairo?

Try not to come here for the summer semester, it is really hot! And don't be fooled by the idea that in winter is still hot, because the buildings are not isolated and it can get really chilly. Other than that, expect a great experience and take care how you cross the street!
