Erasmus Experience in Cadiz, Spain by Alison
Why did you choose to go to Cadiz, Spain?
I researched a lot about Cadiz and just couldn't say no! The beach, the weather, the parties.. Oleeeee Cadiz!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I studied there for 3 months and made lots of lifelong friends at university! I received £370 per month which was quite hard to live on after paying rent but I also had my own savings with me.
What is the student lifestyle like in Cadiz?
Very good! There are a few good bars and clubs that is full of Erasmus students so very easy to make international friends. All of the Spanish students are very friendly and also keen to learn English which is good as I helped them with their English whilst they helped me with my Spanish.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Cadiz to other students?
Yes! It is a beautiful city that has a lovely feeling of old traditional Spain. It is not a tourist destination so is great to experience traditional Spain. The new and old parts of the town offer a great contrast which has something for everyone. The University of Cadiz is very good and the students I met there are friends for life. I studied in the Education Faculty and the Course Leader there was so helpful and accommodating. He always made sure we were okay and if we had any problems, he would help us with these.
What is the food like?
Food is so good! Amazing tapas! Lovely seafood! Really fresh, home-cooked foods - very different from my home town of Glasgow. There are mostly only Spanish restaurants but there is the odd Indian and Chinese restaurant which was good for variety. But when you are an exchange student in Spain, you have to live the lifestyle and eat Spanish!
How much does it cost to live in Cadiz?
We found a 3 bedroom apartment before travelling out to Cadiz from girls who did the same thing last year. It cost us 750 euros per month altogether, including bills (250 euros each).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I did not speak any Spanish before I travelled to Cadiz and this was one of my main concerns but I got on fine. I think this was because, Cadiz is very traditional so not many people speak any English so you have to pick it up! Buying things in the supermarket, getting on the bus, looking at newspapers - all of these things help with the day to day language you need. If you cannot speak Spanish - do not let this put you off, go for it!
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Cadiz from your city?
It isn't the easiest place to get to but well worth it! We flew from Glasgow Prestwick Airport to Malaga Airport then had to get a train from the airport to Malaga centre and then from here another train to Dos Hermanas then from here to Cadiz, it is a long journey but a good adventure!
You can also fly from Glasgow to London and then London to Jerez and then it is a half hour drive from there to Cadiz - these flights were not available when we went however.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Cadiz?
Ehmmm... Woodstock is a good bar if you want a chilled night and a glass of wine. For a night out maybe Nahu (Erasmus club), M2, Aki te Quiero.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Cadiz?
Granja Santa Ana was our favourite restaurant out there! So good!
