Experience in Cáceres, Spain by Samanta Kutulytė
What is it like to live in Cáceres? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I never would have imagined that I would fall in love so madly with a small provincial city in Extremadura. Cáceres is a small and tourist town, which is located close to many major places of interest of the tourists. There are so many things to see. Cáceres is pretty famous for its old town. Also, there are many local shops, which are very charming and you can just go there for some water, milk or other essentials of life. Another amazing place in Cáceres is Plaza Mayor, which is surrounded by many ancient buildings. Also, it is a wide open-space jam-packed with people in the evening, and plenty of terraces to have a beer too, it’s hard not to kick back and forget everything after a few minutes here.
What is the student lifestyle like in Cáceres?
Cáceres has a large student community. Students there are very kind and they try to interact with each other. Student lifestyle is very much alive and kicking at UEX.
How much does it cost to live in Cáceres?
Depends on the person's needs, but approximately you may need something like 500 euro per month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Cáceres? Is there any advice you can give?
There are many students who search for a new roommates, so it's not so difficult to find a place where to live. Also, if you go to study at UEX, the university will definitely help you.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food in Cáceres is very 'Spanish'. Jamón, paella, ensalada con atún and various stews, roast meats (especially pork, lamb and game), fried breadcrumbs etc. But I enjoyed it. Most of the time we were going to have a dinner in the cafe Los Portales, where food is quite good and the cafe is nicely situated in the main square. Also, Extremadura might not be mightily known as a winemaking region but its local offerings, made from tempranillo, deserve more attention than they currently get. The dry reds are the perfect accompaniment to a selection of the region’s cheeses and probably to jamón also.
What places would you recommend visiting in Cáceres?
There are many historical parts, which you can visit at your leisure time and admire the numerous buildings, towers, palaces and plazas, dating from the Middle Ages and Rennaisance. Cáceres has four main areas to be explored. The historical part, the Jewish part, the modern center, and the outskirts. Firstly, I would recommend to visit an old town of Cáceres, then the main museum of Cáceres and also Star Archway, Santa Maria Church and Palace de las Ciguenas.
Is it good to eat out in Cáceres? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
One of my favourite spots to chill out with my laptop and sip herbal tea, Cafe Arabe, situated at the far end of the Plaza Mayor is just as popular with locals too. As I have said before, Los Portales is also a good place to chill out or just enjoy the view of Plaza Mayor.
Is the nightlife good in Cáceres? Where is good to go?
The Torre de Sande provides an atmosphere almost as delicate as its dining and drinks, as its rooms and outdoors are suffused with antique furniture and luxurious gardens. The Wine Palace is a good place for tapas and alcohol, and along Doctor Fleming Street and the Paseo de Canovas is the La Madrila area, which is well-reputed for its nightlife scene. La Madrila is bouncing into the wee hours at places like Saqqara, Ivanhoe, and Latino. The Plaza Mayor also boasts with a healthy after-hours aura, what with all its music and pubs. For live local music check out the Corral de las Ciguenas. Other worthwhile mayor establishments include Capitan Haddock, Misturia Brasileira, La Habana, La Traviata, Torre de Babel, and Las Caballerizas.
