Erasmus Experience in Breda, Netherlands by Raphael
Why did you choose to go to Breda, Netherlands?
Avans Hogeschool University in Breda is a partner of my old university which allowed me to do the exchange.
How long will you be staying there? What monetary help will you receive?
I will be staying there for one year with the DUETI degree in France and with the possibility to stay for longer to obtain a degree from the university of Breda.
What was the student life like in Breda?
The atmosphere is amazing, the students are very welcoming and so is everyone else.
Would you recommend the city and the university of Breda to other students?
Breda is a lovely city, if it is possible to study your degree there, go!
What is the food like in this country?
Coming from France, the food in the Netherlands is straight away less tasty, eating sandwiches is important. Also the quality of food in the supermarkets is not necessarily good.
Did you have any difficulties finding accommodation in Breda?
Giving that I didn't start looking until late, yes. However, I think that with a little time in advance it wouldn't be difficult to find something good.
What is the cost of living in Breda?
It is similar to that of in France, maybe a little bit more expensive for a city of similar size in France.
What was it like to learn the language? Did you go to any language classes organised by the university?
Learning the language for me (English) was quick, for the basics and the classes are compulsory in certain cases for English. Learning Dutch is not compulsory but there are classes offered.
What is the cheapest way to get to Breda from your city?
The cheapest way would be to take the train or a car share. It all depends on when you reserve the ticket.
What areas would you recommend for going out in Breda?
There is a square with different dance bars, but there are no nightclubs. The best think is to go to big events near Breda or a party at the homes of other students.
What about restaurants? What are your favorite places?
Actually, I have only eaten in one restaurant called the 'RIBS factory', it was excellent. However, there are many restaurant with specialities from all over the world.
What cultural visits would you recommend?
I know that there is a museum but I haven't been yet.
Any advice to give to future students to Breda?
Search accommodation in advance, starting to look in August is already too late in my opinion.
