Barcelona has become one of the most important destinations for University students in Europe not only for Erasmus students, but also for those who come from the rest of Spain. It is not just for those studying for an Undergraduate degree, but for Postgraduate or Masters students as well.

It is a city that breathes a dynamic and international atmosphere thanks to its open and cosmopolitan character, and it is because of this that it should be one of the first options you think of when talking about studying abroad.

Studying in Barcelona is fashionable because the city is fashionable, so if you too have thought about coming here to study, pay great attention to this article and the 5 most-asked questions about living in Barcelona:

#1. Where to study in Barcelona?

Barcelona is the headquarters for some of the most important Universities, shopping centres and business schools in the whole of Spain and even Europe. When we talk about Universities, I am talking about the University of Barcelona (UB), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF).

What's more, there are internationally-famous business schools like the IESE Business School (the best in the world) or the ESADE.

These are only the central ones, but in Barcelona you can find a lot more depending on what you want to study.

#2. Do I need to know how to speak Catalan if I am studying in Barcelona?

Depending on the course that you are going to study they will ask you for Catalan. The best advice I can give you is that you need to go with an open mind and take it as an opportunity to learn a new language, as it is quite easy to understand. In fact, there are many international students that surprise themselves learning Catalan and they take it as a positive, learning two languages at once (Castilian and Catalan).

Anyways, the majority of clases are taught in Castilian and there are even more and more that are being taught in English.

#3. Where should I live in Barcelona?

Thanks to this student profile for the city, you can find a wide variety of accommodation options. The Student Halls of Residence in Barcelona are a great option to live a more quiet life and take advantage of your free time to bury yourself in the city.

You can also choose to share a house or apartment, which is a more economic option but that can take time and make you more responsible and independent.

#4. How do I travel around Barcelona?

The public transport network in Barcelona is very complete, so it will be very easy for you to get to anywhere in the city and the metropolitan area.

As well as public transport like the metro and the bus, you can also use the tram which goes through the Diagonal and takes you to nearby places, or you can join Bicing, the service that distributes bikes throughout the city.

If you have your own bike you can move around without any problems thanks to the bike lanes that connect practically every road in Barcelona. Furthermore, thanks to their size, it is a great way to explore the city and each neighbourhood and their vibes.

#5. Where should I eat in Barcelona?

The cheapest options would be to eat inside your Halls of Residence or inside your home. However if you want to give into a craving, you can always go out to eat.

If you go out to eat, the number 1 rule is that you should avoid the tourist areas unless you want to ruin your day. In Barcelona there are great places where you can eat for cheap, but you have to know how to find them. Search on the internet and you will find tonnes of recommendations for every price range.

To complete your student experience abroad, Barcelona is a marvellous option and I encourage you to explore it.
