What is it like to live in Aveiro? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Living in Aveiro is like having everything you need and can find in any big city (shopping areas, parks, cinema, concerts... )but, at the same time, you have quietness and not too much traffic. It is a good place to raise a family, for example.

I lived in Porto (the 2nd biggest city in Portugal) and I moved to Aveiro because I didn't want to waste time in traffic jams and need a family-friendly environment. The city is perfect! It has safe, clean, astonishing landscapes, as well as some canals and typical boats, excellent gastronomy, traditional sweets, nice people and good prices.

What is the student lifestyle like in Aveiro?

I didn't study in Aveiro, so it's hard to say. I was told that nightlife is OK and university students organize all kinds of activities.

How much does it cost to live in Aveiro?

  • Accommodation:

A room in a shared apartment, depending on the location: about 250€, all expenses included.

  • Food:

There are cheap places everywhere and there is the best food. You would spend about 10€ a day if you don't want to cook at home.

  • Transport:

You'll spend no money. You can walk to the university, city centre, hospital, police office; actually, you could go on foot everywhere because everything is quite close.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Aveiro? Is there any advice you can give?

    I don't think so.

  • Cheap areas: a Urbanização A Chave is close to University. Personally, I don't like it very much because there are too many students and it is too close to social apartments. It's a safe area most of the time. However, I wouldn't like to walk there at night.
  • Medium price: o Bairro do Liceu. I don't like it very much either because it is crowded with students, you may get distracted. It's a safe area as well. I would walk there at night with some company.
  • More expensive: the city centre, close to Forum. This area is perfect because it is actually in the centre; it is adequate for girls staying alone. Absolute safe! I would walk alone at all times. :)

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Portuguese food is good everywhere in Portugal.

    My favourite dishes are:

  • codfish with cream in "Cagaréu" (near the railway station)
  • Hamburger in "Augusto" (Rossio)
  • Sea soup in "Centenário" (near Forum)
  • I also like the Ovos Moles from Pastelaria Peixinho, the pastry from Pastelaria Avenida, the chocolate from Rossio...

Try everything! It is worth it!

What places would you recommend visiting in Aveiro?

  • Forum Aveiro for shopping
  • Museums - Santa Joana and Cidade de Aveiro
  • The Ria - there are boats to take you on a very nice trip
  • The beaches Barra and Costa Nova: gorgeous
  • The lighthouse - the 2nd highest in the Peninsula
  • Is it good to eat out in Aveiro? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

    Wonderful. See answer above.

Is the nightlife good in Aveiro? Where is good to go?

It depends on the day. A Praça do Peixe is a must, but there are also concerts, cinema, theatre. You'd better ask for the daily/weekly programme and see what's on it.

What advice would you give future students heading to Aveiro?

Try to come for a whole school year because it is more difficult to find accommodation when it is a semester as landlords prefer students coming for a whole year.

The university is one of the best. It has a fantastic campus, great teachers, great researchers...

Visit other cities as well. Aveiro is close to Coimbra and Porto, two fantastic cities. Lisbon is just 2:30h away by train. A bicycle might be useful but there are also free-rental bicycles all over the city that can be used by everybody.
