For the second time in Aveiro
Walking along the river to the salt mines enjoying the Portuguese humor
The moliceiros (the boat behind us) usually have paintings depicting funny scenes. For translation, have a Portuguese speaker with you, if you consider you need it.
On our way to the big piles of salt we saw a lot of people riding bicycles. In fact, the rate of using bicycles here is eight times higher than the average of the Portuguese cities!
Órbita bikes were invented in Aveiro and now they are popular all around the world (the third in sales on the continent).
The Fish Market (Mercado do Peixe) is divided between generations into:
- the place where the students gather at night;
- the area with a functional, commercial purpose; moreover, it attracts adults due to the numerous restaurants around that serve tasty, fresh fish, as the main dish.
Aveiro has real reasons to be considered the 'City of Salt, Bikes and Fish'!
Tripas
My first tripas de Aveiro! At least the name... because they taste like the usual crepes. But you can choose some unusual toppings, such as ovos moles cream, which is used for making a lot of desserts.
Here I talked about the first Portuguese pastry that was distinguished by the European Union with the title of Protected Geographical Indication.
I recommend sharing a tripas with a friend since they have a heavy consistency. In my opinion, it’s a perfect dish for lunch!
I loved Tripas TeZero for its interior design! They have brought together all the symbols of the region of Aveiro!
Boomerang zone! (Instagram ones, not the banana shaped things) - on the Bridge of Friendship!
Costa Nova
A small fishermen village attracts most of the tourists that visit Aveiro (10 km away), so we ‘gave it a chance’, too.
You will start to sing ‘Happy’, by Pharrell Williams, when you see the striped houses, the unspoilt sand dunes, the waves dashing against the cliffs… At least, I did!
I think that you enjoy your trips more when you have less expectations.
