What is it like to live in Athens? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city is foreign-friendly. Almost everyone speaks English.

However, the city is big. It is not a city only for students and it has the problems a capital has. Although transportation is medium quality, one must always have in mind daily traffic. But the weather is usually good and sunny.

What is the student lifestyle like in Athens?

Athens is an "alive" city. One can find whatever he/she wants. Variety of restaurants, bars, events, festivals, etc....

How much does it cost to live in Athens?

The average cost depends upon what one wants to spend. The main cost is what one will pay for rent and if this cost will include bills (electricity, water, heating & cooling.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Athens? Is there any advice you can give?

I can't say if it is difficult to find accommodation in Athens. I would advise being close to the University School that one is coming for as the schools are all over Athens. I would also advise an air condition machine covering both heat and cool.

In addition, near to the metro stations as for me is the most convenient way of transportation in Athens.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

One can choose from a great variety of food. Meat, fish, pasta, vegetables, legumes.....

My favorite dishes are "gemista"(tomatoes and peppers stuffed with rice baked in the oven) and "pastitsio" (thick spaghetti with minced meat and béchamel)

What places would you recommend visiting in Athens?

Acropolis and the area around (Plaka, Thisio), Syntagma square in Athens and the coastline (Pireaus, Alimos, Glyfada). Niarchos Foundation is also a very nice place to visit.

Is it good to eat out in Athens? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

The most popular food in Athens is "souvlaki". Good Restaurants are all over the city and one can find from cheap to expensive dishes.

For vegetarians, I would recommend "Avocado" in Syntagma Square.

What advice would you give future students heading to Athens?

Come and enjoy yourselves. Avoid some areas in the night like Omonoia, Athinas str. and be always careful with your things.
