What to expect in the Greek Islands
In the fall of 2016, Some friends and I budgeted to travel to Greece. We'd spent up to 4 hours at airport's arrival and later went to the docks via bus where we also waited until 5 am the next day. From Athens, we boarded a ship to the Mykonos island. This was about 50 Euros/ person. We were a big group, all from the same place— the University Of Pecs, Medical School, Hungary.
Whilst on the ship, we met two ladies from the University of Michigan, USA. They were lovely and friendly, and from that point on the eleven of us planned our trip together. Our adventure started from the beach in Platis Gialos since our apartment was only 200 meters away from it, and to get to the Mykonos city, we rented quad bikes. In the evenings we visited the local bars near the beach and the locals and employees were kind. Mykonos nightlife is by far, one the top three on my list.
Now, I am going to pause here to emphasize the dangers of quads, especially in an area with rough architectures including sharp turns, short walls and cliffs like the Mykonos Island. It's cliché that we always hear these "safety first" and " wear a helmet" warnings but unfortunately, this is very true because I suffered a concussion from a fall whilst reversing out of a narrow driveway with my quad. While I do not regret the trip, the repercussions were my incapable of enjoying Greece the way I would have and of course, paying for the damages to the bike.
Aside from that, Mykonos was fun, we got to jet ski and ride quads and eat luxurious island food and make more friends. When we returned to Athens, we made plans to visit the Acropolis, we were however disappointed because apparently, they open seasonally so at that particular time in fall they closed indefinitely. On the bright side, we saw the temple of Olympian Zeus, the Agora of Athens and the Monastiraki flea market in the city center.
Because of my little accident, I got to witness a bit of the medical scene. Like every where the emergency outpatient was well over packed and I ended up just arguing with the Dr. (about what hat he thought I needed vs what I actually needed) and I left as we couldn't come to an agreement after having to wait for several hours.
So Greece wasn't so amazing, mostly because I had a trifling headache in the last two days, nevertheless, the ancient architecture in Athens combined with the modern, hip Mykonos made it worthwhile.
