Experience in Athens, Greece by Magda
What is it like to live in Athens? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Athens is a very interesting experience. On one hand you have the buzzing rhythm of the city and on the other you can find neighborhoods that the atmosphere changes all of a sudden and becomes lively and full of positive energy. I would totally recommend staying here and becoming a part of the city, even for a limited amount. It will entice you.
What is the student lifestyle like in Athens?
As I said earlier, there are tons of stuff for a student to attend to. From educational activities to just relaxing or enjoying the very rich nightlife.
How much does it cost to live in Athens?
Living in Athens is neither cheap nor expensive. You can find reasonable prices to almost everything.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Athens? Is there any advice you can give?
Finding accommodation is not hard. Finding good and value for money accommodation can be a bit tricky though. There are good apartments out there, you just have to look closer.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is excellent. Both traditional and more sophisticated or ethnic cuisine. My personal favorite is the New Mediterranean Cuisine. Tradition flavored with new essences is too good to ignore.
What places would you recommend visiting in Athens?
There are of course the must-sees like Acropolis and Plaka, Syntagma square etc. You should drop by Plato's Academy, a little outside the historical centre. It is surrounded by a park ideal for weekend strolls.
Is it good to eat out in Athens? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, it is good to eat out in Athens. My favorite spot is the organic-vegan restaurant "Avocado", near Syntagma square. The neighborhood of Votanikos is also excellent due to the variety of establishments. Other than that you can of course find other districts as well.
Is the nightlife good in Athens? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is very good with great variety. You can visit nightclubs of all kinds or try going to a kafenio, which is like the spanish tapas bars but closer to the greek culture and rebetico music. You don't know rebetico? Well it's high time you learned!
What advice would you give future students heading to Athens?
I know that the nightlife and activities can be thrilling and enticing but believe me, organize yourself and enjoy everything this city has to offer. If you pay attention you might even feel its energy boiling! When you put it all together in the end you can be sure you will have second thoughts about leaving.
