Experience in Athens, Greece by Carolina
What is it like to live in Athens? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Athens is exhausting but also full. The city has its dark sides (such as dirt, long distances to everything etc. ), but apart from that, it's a city full of history, sights and architecture. Athens has combined mountain scenery and seaside. I would strongly recommend it.
What is the student lifestyle like in Athens?
I'd say the student lifestyle in Athens is difficult because teachers have many requirements, there are lots of homework, long distances from one place to another (you can spend 1 hour to go to your university and 1 more to return which is vital time). Although being a student, I enjoy my life because there is nothing I'd want and I would not find it. Plus, I made so many friends that I get invited to at least 4 parties every week.
How much does it cost to live in Athens?
House rent, bills and personal needs, cost almost 400 euros per month. If you want to eat out, it will cost you 15-30 euros and for a coffee 3-5 euros.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
You can find restaurants everywhere because in Greece we love food and we can spend hours eating and drinking wine or raki (Greek alcoholic drink). The most famous Greek dishes are musakas and souvlaki (I recommend both of those dishes).
What places would you recommend visiting in Athens?
First of all, you should visit our landmark, Acropolis. There is a great architecture and an amazing view. After Acropolis, I'd recommend Lycabettus.
Is it good to eat out in Athens? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Every corner has places for fast food. My favourite spots to eat are in Kypseli, "Kypseli Kalamaki", at Fokionos Negri. Basically, it sells Greek souvlaki. At the center of Athens, I suggest the restaurant "Dioskuroi", at Andrianou Street.
Is the nightlife good in Athens? Where is good to go?
The whole Greece has very loud nightlife. In Athens, particularly, at Peireos Street, there are lots of clubs and afters. I don't usually go to clubs but I'd recommend to others "W". Apart from that, at Kerameikos station (line 3 metro) you can find countless bars in a line. Personally, my favourite is "Soho" because on Sundays there is a program where jugglers do magic tricks.
What advice would you give future students heading to Athens?
My advices are:
- Mind your personal belongings.
- Make trusted friends.
- Study hard and rock every party!
