Experience in Athens, Greece by Angeliki
What is it like to live in Athens? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Athens is really exciting. You have many opportunities in regard to what you want to do. There are many places to seat for a coffee or for a walk and many places from where you can have a panoramic view of the city. You also have many things to do far from the center of the city, so you won't get bored wherever you decide to go.
How much does it cost to live in Athens?
It depends on the apartment that you are looking for. In general, the prices are from 200- 350€. It also depends on the region you want to live, as the prices may vary.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Athens? Is there any advice you can give?
It is not that difficult but for sure you have to search in advance. My advice is to stay away from regions near to the city center such as Omonia and Viktoria cause it can be really dangerous, even though the prices are cheaper.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
You have many choices regarding the food, based on your preferences. There are a lot of restaurants with seafood, meat, vegetarian/ vegan. You can also find cheap food choices such as Souvlaki, famous food in Greece. My personal favorite greek dishes are mousakas, gemista and pastitsio.
What places would you recommend visiting in Athens?
I would totally recommend visiting the hills that are in the city center as you can have a full view of the city from there. Lycabettus is a really nice place to start. Acropolis and its hill is also a must-see. If you want to escape from the city you can visit Sounio or Parnitha, depending on whether you are in a mood for sea or mountains.
Is the nightlife good in Athens? Where is good to go?
Nightlife in Athens is really good. There are many different options of clubs and bars where you can go, depending on your preferences. There is also the possibility of a party near the sea or in the center of the city.
What advice would you give future students heading to Athens?
Be ready to live your best life here, as long as you take care of yourselves, 'cause it's a big and chaotic city
