Erasmus experience in Athens, Greece from Jessica
Why did you decide to go to Athens, Greece?
I am studying at the AUEB, here all courses are in Englich. Furthermore the weather is amazing and you can do a lot of things and visit historical sights. On the weekend we are usually going to the beach or on a Greece island. :)
How lang lasts the scholarship? How much money do you receive?
My semester goes from October to the middle of February, the same for the scholarship. The height of the financial support depends on the home university.
How is your student life in Athens?
There are a lot of things to discover and stundents often get a discount. In addition the transport and the copyshops are really affordable. So you can print out things for the university...
Would you recommend The university and Athens to other students?
Of course, because the people are super nice and you even get on with less Greek skills. The university is well organised and you have a lot of choices. However the erasmus students are among themselves...
How is the traditional cooking?
Obviously there are gyros, feta, halloumi-cheese and ouzo. You can get "gyrospita" on every corner for 2 euro.
Did you have to pay something for getting the accommodation in Athens?
No, the university imparted me a contact person.
How expensive is Athens?
Athens is really expensive in comparison to the German discount supermarkets. But for students the meal in the canteen is for free. So it is okay. The expense for the rent is reasonable, its between 200-200€ with utilities for a room in a shared flat.
Is it easy to understand Greek? Does the university provides language courses?
In my opinion Greek is not easy to understand, especially when Greeks are talking. When you read it you recognize a lot of words from the German. There is a language course at the university. I already have visited one in Germany.
Is it affordable to go from Athens to your home city?
Since Septembre 2017 Ryanair is flying from Frankfurt to Athens. Moreover there is a ESN card for erasmus stundent. It includes a 15% discount on flights and luggage for free.
What do you think is the best place to party in Athens?
I always was at the ESN Parties and they were great :)
And for eating? Can you suggest some good restaurants in Athens?
I always ate somewhere else...
Are there interesting cultural sights?
Obviously the acropolis. But there are also some hills, where you can enjoy an amazing view.
