Erasmus Experience in Athens, Greece by Dominyka
Why did you choose to go to Athens, Greece?
Because it was in a warmer climate than where I'm from, also I admire the city's history. I also took notice that the prices were similar to where I'm from.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I was in Athens for about four months and would get about 470 euros a month as a scholarship
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Athens?
It was hard to find and we had to switch a few places before we settled on the one. The rent for two people for us varied from 425-475 euros per month bills included.
How much does it cost to live in Athens?
The food prices are quite cheap, you can also find cheap places if you want to go out. The priciest thing is the rent - 475 euros for a small 1 bedroom apartment. Transport costs about 15 euros a month, internet for your phone about 15 euros a month also. Everything else kind of depends of what you want to buy and how you spend your own money.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
No, the language is very hard. We weren't aware if there were any language courses. We did manage to learn a few words though just by being around people.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Athens from your city?
Airplane. There aren't any other options.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Athens?
There are a lot of clubs and a lot of parties happen especially for Erasmus students, more so during the start of the semester, and there is plenty to choose from. Also there is a lot of old-school open-air cinemas working during the season, which can be fun if you don't like partying every night.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Athens?
For vegan food - VeganBeat near Monastiraki is really really good and the price is great.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Acropolis, obviously. The museums are also fun, and most of them are free for students. The rock near Acropolis (not sure what it's called) and Lycabettus Hill have the best views of the city without much of a climbing effort.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Athens in the future?
Be careful with your personal things. Also, be aware to do your grocery shopping or any other shopping before Sunday, because most shops are closed on Sunday and the ones that are open are way more expensive.
