Experience in Antwerp, Belgium by Björn

What is it like to live in Antwerp? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Well I don't live in Antwerp. My school is based in the big city. However Antwerp and Brussels are located very close near my home town: Mechelen.

Living or staying in Antwerp, I would recommand it. Every day there is a wide array of activities to do. Visit museums, visit and take pictures of the architecture, parties, get drunk following student activities...

It's a beautiful city with alot of sightseeing, however the traffic is always a hell. Driving in Antwerp around rush hour is so horrible. Don't be suprised getting stuck in a traffic jam. 

What is the student lifestyle like in Antwerp?

Well for every student, Antwerp is a great city. After school you can go and have a drink in numerous bars. (De Prof, Kroeg, Kassa 4, Salamander, Klimax, ...)
From monday until Sunday people can go out around the city of Antwerp. There are a few of nightclubs around Antwerp and in Antwerp itself

How much does it cost to live in Antwerp?

Well the cost of living in Antwerp is doable. I've been to Besançon (France) on Erasmus. I have to say that drinks and food are a lot cheaper here than in France.
The rent may be in every category: from 250 to 1000.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Antwerp? Is there any advice you can give?

Finding accommodation in Antwerp might be difficult. That's why I would recommand to join the sites of erasmus Belgium (Antwerp), but also sites containing demands of accommodation etc. Your best chance is starting your search around the end of an academic year. 

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Well, my favourite dishes, are chinese (wok), fries or pizza.
Restaurants who serve dishes like my favourites are easy to find in Antwerp. There aren't only proper restaurants in Antwerp, McDonalds and Quick are to be found everywhere. 

What places would you recommend visiting in Antwerp?

Groenplaats, Rooseveltplaats, Central station, Meir, Falconplein (going out), Kaaien (near the river Schelde), Paardenmarkt etc. At those places students start their evenings.

Is it good to eat out in Antwerp? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yep it is very good to go have dinner in Antwerp. Around de kaaien you will find different types of restaurants, but also in the city you'l find some nice places. Mine would be Verona, Da Giovanni,

Is the nightlife good in Antwerp? Where is good to go?

Nightlife is the best. Every day you can find bars full of students.
Sunday - Tuesday - Thursday - Friday and Saturday clubs are open. Most are open from 22:00 until 06:00. 

What advice would you give future students headed to Antwerp?

Go out, have a blast while being there, and be social!
