Erasmus Experience in Antwerp, Belgium by Kasia
What is the food like?
Belgian fries and mayonnaise, Belgian beer (Especially Kriek :D cherry beer for girls) and Belgian chocolates are delicous!
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
For German speaking students Dutch is really easy to get grips with. The language courses are very good. I personally recommend Linguapolis UA. Especially for the Erasmus Intensive Language Course (EILC).
However almost all people in Antwerp can speak English ;-)
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Antwerp from your city?
If you go by plane - the easiest way to get to the Brussels International Airport from Antwerp is "Airport Express". It stops next to the Antwerp Central Station (‘Koningin Astridplein’) next goes to Crown Plaza Hotel (Antwerp South) and than directly to Brussels Airport. The way lasts approximately 45 min. The coach leaves every hour. Timetable is available on their website (http://www.airportexpress.be). One way ticket costs 10 euro.
If you fly from Charleroi airport than the easiest way is to take a train directly from Antwerp to Charleroi. From the Charleroi Railway station there is a direct bus (bus A) that will take you to the Charleroi airport. The travel by train lasts around 1h40min and than around 25min by bus. Buses leaves like around every 15minuts.
If you by train. I recommend buying a GO-PASS ticket. It costs 50 euro and is valid for 10 journeys (one-way) all around Belgium ;-) GO-PASS you can at the station.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Antwerp?
Da Giovanni ( Jan blomstraat - city center) is surely worth recommendation ;-). Very good pizza and nice discounts for students (if you show them your Student-ID you receive a discount - 20% off)
