Erasmus Experience in Antwerp, Belgium by Ágnes
Why did you choose to go to Antwerp, Belgium?
Initally, I wanted to go to London, but it was too expensive and Antwerp is just so lovely and the location is perfect. Amsterdam, Paris, London is easily accessible and Belgium is beautiful.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I spent 4 months there. Uni started in the middle of September. I have got 1600euros for the for months and I need this amount from my parents.
What is the student lifestyle like in Antwerp?
I was attending master classes and it was a very good surprise that students had a lot of additional knowledge and they were very active during lectures and seminars.
Of course, partying is basic, every Thursday is party day. We were gathering on the town square, had a beer and frittes (Watch out, so easy to overindulge!) Firday session were ditched often.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Antwerp to other students?
i was attending Lessius Hogeschool, but definietly. If I would choose where to go, I would choose Antwerp again.
What is the food like?
Food is good, Belgians have a big sandwich culture. Basically you can find a sandwich shop on every corner. Fries are the national food with different sauces.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Antwerp?
The search itself no, but it is very hard to find something, as landlords are renting rooms on 6months or 1 year contracts. If you wont have dorm ensured by uni, it is better to go for the summer and work there and rent something for 6 months.
How much does it cost to live in Antwerp?
As Im not smoking and dont drink too much it was fair enough. I just cant remember how much money I have spent.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is very hard. I couldnt learn a word.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Antwerp from your city?
Cheap arilines
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Antwerp?
The Proof.....and there are 2 clubs down the river....
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Antwerp?
My favourite one was a sandwich shop ( culture has serious impact) It was near Katten Straat.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Museums and exhibitions as anywhere but for me Ghent and Bruges were breath taking. Especially in winter season.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Antwerp in the future?
Umbrella, wellingtons, napkins....and lot of coins for washing. Otherwise, just enjoy themselves and the freedom they have with Erasmus. Travel as much as they can and take part in university programs because there are lot of activities they can go on and make friends.
