Experience in Ankara, Turkey by Banu
What is it like to live in Ankara? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city might come off as quite boring for people who are not from Ankara. It doesn't have many tourist attractions, there aren't many activities however this has been changing in the last year. I personally really like the city but I can understand why other people wouldn't
What is the student lifestyle like in Ankara?
It is not as lively as Istanbul however there are some nice spots. Again, it depends on your social circle and the school you're applying to.
How much does it cost to live in Ankara?
Depends on your expenses but compared to İstanbul its much cheaper, and compared to many European cities it is definitely cheap.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ankara? Is there any advice you can give?
It's not that difficult, there are a lot of flats available. Many people don't speak English so bringing a local with you would be great. And many schools offer a spot in the school dorms.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I love Turkish food. Anything that belongs to the Turkish cuisine, you can find in Ankara. I'd recommend everyone to try the dessert "katmer" with some ice cream in it.
What places would you recommend visiting in Ankara?
Anıtkabir, Ankara kalesi, Eymir gölü, Beypazarı, Tuzgölü (not entirely in Ankara)
Is it good to eat out in Ankara? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I think it is a good option to eat out, I'd recommend Midpoint, Mickeys and for more traditional food there are many kebab places you can just walk in.
Is the nightlife good in Ankara? Where is good to go?
Its not very lively, but there are some spots depending on what you are looking for. Pixel and Kite usually have some events, Brasserie Bomonti is more of a casual place to out I'd say. But I wouldn't say any of these are very good.
What advice would you give future students heading to Ankara?
Travel a lot, especially within Turkey, even if you find Ankara boring you will see that there are a lot of places to see in Turkey that you can arrange quick visits to. Also, meet locals and eat local food.
