Experience in Almeria, Spain

What was it like to live in Almeria? Would you recommend it? What's the city like?

I would really recommend living in the city Almeria... the people there are generous and cheerful.

The climate is perfect for people who love the sun and the heat. There are also many different types of shops, a number of bars to have tapas, the sea, the mountains and the desert.

My experience in Almeria was an incredible one and I met some big-hearted people.

What's the student life like in Almeria?

I didn't really go to university because I found a work experience placement to do as part of my BTS (Advanced Vocational Diploma) in an English school. For that reason, I can't really talk about the student atmosphere.

What's the living cost in Almeria?

Living in Almeria isn't very expensive at all! In fact, this city is inexpensive in every aspect, whether that be food or clothes... it's great.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Almeria? Do you have any advice to give?

I don't really have any advice as such with regard to looking for accommodation because I was staying in a really spacious one-bed studio, right in the centre of Almeria. I didn't need to pay for any public transport, so my living cost was 500 euros for a month and a half (with water and electricity bills included, but not Internet).

What's the food like in the city? What are your favourite dishes?

The traditional food in Almeria is amazing... the majority are fish dishes and it's really varied.

I really loved the gastronomy and I look forward to finding places in France which offer this kind of food when I return.

What places would you recommend visiting in Almeria?

Without a doubt, the Alcazaba and Mini Hollywood!

The Alcazaba is a huge fortress which overlooks the whole of Almeria. It's simply magnificent. There are gorgeous gardens and the view is incredible! It's the place where they filmed scenes from the series Game of Thrones (season 6). The entrance is free.

Mini Hollywood is equally a huge place. It's like a theme park with film sets where a number of films were shot! It has a large zoo with lots of different species and a free swimming pool! (the entrance fee is 22.50 euros). The park is located in the Tabernas desert. You have to get a bus there (which costs around 5 euros return).

Many people also told me to visit the town Cabo de Gata but unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to go there...

And what about eating out in Almeria? Can you tell us your favourite places?

I recommend eating in the little restaurants facing the sea. The view is superb, and there's a relaxing atmosphere great for trying different tapas.

What advice would you give to future Erasmus students in Almeria?

Live your experience to the full and take advantage of the rich culture this town has to offer. Don't hesitate to talk to the locals to find out a bit more about the city.
