Living in Almería

What is it like living in Almería? Would you recommend it? How is it?

If you like a hot climate, Almería is the city for you! It is quite a small city in comparison to other cities in Spain, but this doesn't stop it from having a gorgeous and rich culture and heritage. Living in Almería is good, as long as it is in the capital or nearby. If you move far away from the capital, you may have trouble getting around, as buses don't go pass very often and the road to the University is long. However, if you are coming to Almería to study, my advice would be stay in the capital and then you won't have any kind of problems.

What is the student lifestyle like in Almería?

The student lifestyle in Almería is good and varied. There are a lot of Erasmus students from all over the world and there are always different activities being organised inside the University so that you can get to know other people and their cultures. They also organise conferences and cultural activities throughout the entire year where you can surround yourself with a huge amount of other students.

In terms of going out, there are loads of clubs and bars for everyone's tastes. Furthermore, inside the University they organise their own parties and it is always a very useful way of getting to know people. The days where most people go out are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

How much does it cost to live in Almería?

It is not expensive to live in Almería. You can find shared flats for an amount in between 150-200 euro per month, depending on the area you want to live in. The transport is also very cheap, like 30 euro a month if you get the urban travel card which allows you to travel throughout the capital by bus and catch them whenever you want.

The food, I guess, is like everywhere. Although, eating out is quite cheap if you go for tapas (with beer or wine they let you choose the tapa, and is quite a good price, between 1. 50€ and 2. 50€ depending on the place).

How did you find accommodation in Almería? Do you have any advice?

Next year they are opening a new Halls of Residence (in theory), near to the centre of town. In whatever case, if you are thinking of renting a flat, I would recommend that you look in the Zapillo area, which is next to the beach and it has lots of bus stops that take you to the University and the centre. Although, to walk to the centre from here is not far either. It is quite easy to find accommodation. On the Almería University Facebook page there are always publications asking or looking for flatmates.

What's the food like in your country? What is your favourite dish?

The food in Almeria is quite rich, especially the fish and shellfish, which are usually quite fresh. The typical diet here is the Mediterranean diet, and there is a tradition of making a dish called "migas" ("crumbs") when it rains, which I particularly love.

Which places do you recommend to visit in Almería?

Without a doubt, Cabo de Gata. It is a beautiful National Park where they have filmed a couple of movies. It is really good if you want to be in the middle of nature, surrounded by beach.

Another place I recommend for you to visit is the Tabernas Desert. It is a unique landscape inside the Peninsular. Almería is the only province with a dessert and, without a doubt, it is worth it to go to Tabernas to visit. Furthermore, there is a theme park based in the West where you can see different spectacles and visit the zoo inside there. Although, I have to say, it is a little expensive, but I think the experience in the desert is worth it.

And to eat in Almería? Can you tell us your favourite places to eat?

As I mentioned before, the best thing to eat in Almería is the tapas. There are lots of places in the centre to eat tapas and the majority of them are quite good. In particular, I like a place called La Mazmorra a lot. It is in the Zapillo area, where there are also lots of good places to eat and there is one that is full of students as it is really cheap and they give you loads of food. It is called La Cabaña del Tío Tom. Lastly, if you like fish, I would recommend you go to Entre Mares. The fish and seafood is the freshest and very very tasy!

Where do you recommend going out in Almería?

Without a doubt, go to an area called Cuatro Calles. It is an area that has loads of pubs and clubs together, and there is always such a good atmosphere in the evening. It can be found in the centre of Almería. If you want to go out further, you can always go towards Mojacar where the clubs are even more incredible, although that being said, it is better to spend a couple of days in a hotel there if you want to go out clubbing.

Is there any advice you want to give to future students going to Almería?

I encourage you to come here! Most Almerians are very sociable, the teachers are quite friendly with the foreign students, and there's no doubt: the climate, the beach, and the landscape will captivate them! So don't be afraid, and enjoy the ERASMUS experience in Almeria.
