Experience in Aberdeen, United Kingdom by Maximilian
What is it like to live in Aberdeen? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Aberdeen is not such a big city. That's why, you do not really need the public transport. It is easy to walk or bike to any destination in town. The city is so good that the campus is very close to the beach. When sunny days, students meet on the beach and have BBQ there. However, you need to consider it rains a lot here, it never turns really cold. The city is very green and full of historical buildings. I liked the experience of studying in Aberdeen. Scottish food is what I did not like so much. However, here you can find a lot of Indian, Pakistani and other Asian food stores, which have tasty food.
What is the student lifestyle like in Aberdeen?
There are many different student communities you can join. In these student communities you are able to meet people from the whole globe. This is very interesting. Also, you can join many sport clubs.
How much does it cost to live in Aberdeen?
Housing turned cheaper since 2016. The rental approximately costs 380-400 euros per month. More and more appartments turn up on the market for rent. Meaning here are many empty appartments. Reason behind is, that many BP workers left the area and the demand on the housing market went down. Shopping is affordable in the German supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi. There you can manage you weekly crocery with max. around 50GBP per week.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Aberdeen? Is there any advice you can give?
Not anymore. Too many empty appartments are on the housing market.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
English food or Scottish food is not my cup of tea. But my favorite food was the Indian and Pakistani food. In fact, very close to the campus, you find some really good take away restaurants with extremely good dishes.
What places would you recommend visiting in Aberdeen?
The beach side of Aberdeen is very nice. If somebody likes nature a lot then also the river Don gives an attractive place for long walks or having a ride with a kanu on the river. I also recommend going by ferry to Orkney and Shetland islands and the interesting and small Art Museum.
Is it good to eat out in Aberdeen? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
The most interesting restaurants are the foreign restaurants, such as Chinese, Brazilian or Indian restaurants. Only hardcore people will find try the local food.
Is the nightlife good in Aberdeen? Where is good to go?
The are many pubs with live music in Aberdeen. Usually, each club has an entrance check. You need to have your ID with you. The most funny parties are the self organized parties with other students and friends.
What advice would you give future students heading to Aberdeen?
Find your room in advance. If you cannot find a room early enough, then check in at the B and B called Alba Guesthouse at King street. This is very close to the campus and gives you a good start in Aberdeen.
