Why did you choose to go to Aarhus, Denmark?

It was somewhere different and I'd never really considered Denmark or the Northern European countries before as places to visit. No regrets though it was a fantastic experience!

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I was there from the middle of August until the first week in December, it really depends on exams and stuff how long you could be there, I received approx. €1450, this only barely covered living expenses, deposit for accommodation is €1000 so save well before going otherwise you will find it tough to survive over there! Be wise with your money is what I'm saying.

What is the student lifestyle like in Aarhus?

Pretty good, the Student Union organized different nights out for Halloween, Freshers week etc.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Aarhus to other students?

Yes definitely, it is expensive but so worth it! Danes are quite reserved though but overall a friendly bunch.

What is the food like?

Lovely - a lot like Irish food and if that doesn't appeal to you there's plenty of McDonalds, Burger King and sandwich bars throughout the city!

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Aarhus?

Well I was assigned a mentor who helped me get to where I live - it didn't cost anything but we had to use the bus once or twice, but my mentor used her ticket for me which was very nice of her.

How much does it cost to live in Aarhus?

Approx. €600 per month if you are wise about it. Rent approx. €370, transport about €35, and food which would add up.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?

They speak English very well in Denmark and usually have no problem speaking the language as it might as well be their mother tongue.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Aarhus from your city?

Well I'm from Ireland so plane is the easiest. If your talking about getting around Aarhus or getting to Aarhus city from where I lived in Denmark, then probably the bike - I never used one but the Danes are noted for being a bike friendly country - you'll see why when you get there. The bus is also very good, they're always on time and very easy to use!

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Aarhus?

The Australian Bar, or the student bar in the University.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Aarhus?

Well they are quite expensive but there's plenty of restaurants there to suit your fancy. Along the Aboulevarden is where the majority of them are.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Aros Museum, Den Gamle By, Tivoli, the harbour etc. there really are too many to name.

Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Aarhus?

Just make the most of the time you have there! And bring plenty of warm clothes as it gets very cold in winter!
