What is it like to live in Vilnius? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

As most of the capital cities in Europe, Vilnius is heavily populated having in mind the total amount of inhabitants in Lithuania. It has neighbourhoods ranging from heavily industrialised to housing and center. Because it is a big city there is a lot going on and most of the events - concerts, theater or sports events are held in Vilnius. I've spent there most of my life and i think it is a great city with lots of opportunities and things to do and experience.

What is the student lifestyle like in Vilnius?

Students have a lot going on including tight study schedules and socialising activities. Most students go bar crawling or enjoy nightlife. There are plenty activities around the city with many adrenaline parks and etc. Also you can get great student discounts.

How much does it cost to live in Vilnius?

It is possible to get a room from around 72 euros and the transportation is around 10 euros a month. The biggest expenses are on food and other commodities. For this prepare to spend twice as much as on your housing.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vilnius? Is there any advice you can give?

There are plenty student sites on Facebook that look for roomates or offer flats. Also many real estate brokers offer a wide range of appartments, studios and houses to choose from. Also there is a possibility to get student housing, but it is not of the highest quality, although improving in the past years.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

For southern europeans it would be something weird but people from northern countries or central Europe would enjoy the food. It is heavy in fat, starch and other goodness. This is due to fact that the winter is very cold in Lithuania and it is important to eat good and stay healthy. Apart from traditional cuisine Vilnius offers many places for different tastes - numerous pizzerias, sushi places, grills and etc. In addition, local brewed beer and spirits are usually offered and having a beer with fried bread&cheese is a local tradition. My favourite dishes are dumplings with meat (Cepelinai) for the winter and cold beet soup (Saltibarsciai) for the summer.

What places would you recommend visiting in Vilnius?

Vilnius is known for churches and pretty much the whole old town is breathing medieval. If the weather is good though i suggest visiting Trakai which is around 40km and a medieval castle surounded by lakes is located in there. A really nice thing to see. They hold medieval festivals that are pretty fun. For a calm drink and enjoying beautiful scenery in the night visit restaurant Gan Bei or the TV tower.

Is it good to eat out in Vilnius? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

I don't do it a lot. I try to visit local spots that offer the food i like. For foreign things Gan Bei has nice chineese/japanese food with a nice view and a good price. For beer i highly recommend visiting Alaus Namai, Busi Trecias and Snekutis.

Is the nightlife good in Vilnius? Where is good to go?

I would say it is really nice. All the good spots are located on Islandijos street. Something for everyone.

What advice would you give future students heading to Vilnius?

Enjoy, have a good time and don't be afraid to try the food
