Experience in Vienna, Austria by Studentshome

What is it like to live in Vienna? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Vienna is an amazing city. I would definitely recommend to live here, or at least to visit this city. There are numerous possibilities for leisure time activities: museums, parks, cafes, open air bars... and the prices are rather ok. Between March and October, the weather is beautiful, nearly no rain. Although in summer it can get really hot. The big advantage is that there is a great public transport system which brings you anywhere you want to. Additionally, there are many bike lanes.

Regarding the gastronomy, Vienna is typical for coffee and a lot of delicious food. So there are thousands of (also affordable) possibilities there too. When it comes to partying in Vienna, there are numerous clubs, bars, and other locations with different music styles and different prices of course. Although I have seen many other places all around the world, I definitely would call Vienna one of my favourite cities. Even if you only walk through the city, there are a thousand things to see and experience.

What is the student lifestyle like in Vienna?

Students in Vienna go out a lot during the week. There are numerous bars and clubs, where affordable drinks are offered. Very often, the parties are located in different dormitories. This is always great fun, as you get to know numerous other students. What I really appreciate is that people are studying together in groups, sometimes at anyone's home, or sometimes directly at the university, in the library or studying rooms. This helps again to get to know other to students, and also if you have problems with anything you can always ask someone to help you out as people here are really friendly.

How much does it cost to live in Vienna?

It definitely depends on where you live or where you go out and eat. Yet, there are numerous options for every price category.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vienna? Is there any advice you can give?

It is not really hard to find accommodation in Vienna. I absolutely can recommend City Life Apartments. They offer whole apartments! And are not much more expensive than other dormitories.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Food is really tasty in Vienna. I really love that everything comes with potatoes. Or potato salad. Topfenstrudel is one of my favourite desserts. It's like Applestrudel, only with curd. And Rostbraten is definitely one of my favourite dishes (roast joint). That's really delicious!

What places would you recommend visiting in Vienna?

I really love Naschmarkt, it's a market where you can buy food, fruit, herbs, everything you can imagine but also have some food. And I really love Gloriette, it is above the palace Schoenbrunn. And the Tuerkenschanzpark, a huge park where you can go for a walk, or just hang out.

Is it good to eat out in Vienna? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Naschmarkt is amazing to have food! Also at Museumsquartier, a spot where party and food meet. You can have great stuff there too.

Is the nightlife good in Vienna? Where is good to go?

Depending on what kind of music you like. There are clubs like Passage, U4, Club Lutz which are rather expensive. The Bermuda Triangle is also a well-known spot in Vienna. You definitely have to check that out once. But there are also nice alternative bars like Chelsea, B 72, or Flex. I really like the open air bars, like at Museumsquartier, or Tel Aviv Beach.

What advice would you give future students heading to Vienna?

Be ready to gain some experience!
