Medieval Girona

Published by flag- Denys Momot — 5 years ago

As you know from my blog I have been travelling in Girona. During my internship I figured to go to historic town to get to know with its background. I decided to go there because I am into history and culture.

The interesting fact on Girona is that the Romans built a citadel and named it "Gerunda". The Romans were the first people who indicated civilization in Girona. Basically, the Roman Empire established the status of town. Later the town had been ruled and developed by Visigoths who belonged to Germanic peoples. After them the Moors took over. Surprisingly they were Muslim inhabitants of the Maghreb. The Moors had been ruled Girona for couple hundreds of years until the "Crown of Aragon" got in charge. Over the years the name was changed to Girona.

I stayed at a hotel for a night to see as much as possible. On the first day of my stay in Girona I went out to the old town. It looked gorgeous to me. The town is beautiful and streets are full of tourists from Western Europe. I got chance to relax in one old town. I walked in in the restaurant sat back and enjoying Spanish cuisine "Gazpacho" and "Paella". After, I ate at one of the restaurants of old town. I kept walking around the old town. I could not picture that such small town may capture my attention, especially the beauty of Romanesque and Gothic architecture style. The town itself has great popularity. Strolling around the town it felt as if I got into medieval times. Turned out that the town Girona was founded in 79 BC. Truly speaking I hardly believed in such numbers. Now it is quite clear why the TV show "Game of Thrones" was filming there.

I liked the view from the river "Onyar". It was something extraordinary to me. It looked like the single house with different colours. However there are plenty houses. Most of the tourists take photos there. You may see the photo below.

Going strictly further to the end of the old town I noticed "The Collegiate Church of Sant Feliu" which was built in a perfect Gothic style in 14th century. I also went inside of the church and it looks even better. However, it was prohibited to take photos inside. The photo of the church you may see below.

Girona is also town of street art. I have seen dozens of pictures on the walls of the houses. I even took couple photos to show you how it looks. By the way, it is a good idea to make your town more colourful and bright. In fact, those street art paintings were outside of the old town. Majority of them were inside of down town and only several of them were in remote district. Apparently, the government decided not to spoil the magnificent part of Girona, otherwise it would affect tourists in the negative way. Although, I had no purpose to see them all, I saw more than I could imagine. My favourite street art paintings which I took are below.

Besides, I had time to visit several modern, good-looking shopping centers. I did minor touring in a great shopping center "Espai Girona". In addition, I figured to walked in "Girocentre". Actually, it was not just tours in shopping centers, I bought several goods for myself. Apart from the medieval history Girona might serve as for shopping field too. Thus, these factors make Girona a little bit modern.

Finally, I can say that Girona is an ancient town with a great historical heritage. Due to Roman Empire and Crown of Aragon the town Girona looks medieval because the government saved the most of buildings. Therefore it is very attractive for tourists and TV shows. Nevertheless medieval times, I experienced modern life too, especially when I saw dozens of street art paintings. It was good to know with historical town Girona.
