Why did you choose to go to Delft, Netherlands?

Because the TU Delft has a good reputation in my field of studies (Aerospace Engineering).

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

Two semesters - around 1700 €.

What is the student lifestyle like in Delft?

A lot of parties and a lot of borrels (drinks) after work - at the TU there are borrels from each faculty, each taking place at least once per week.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Delft to other students?

Yes.

What is the food like?

Dutch people usually eat bread for lunch and cook in the evening. Going out for meals is rather expensive (in German terms), but there are lunch trucks selling good food for reasonable prices around the campus every day.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Delft?

Yes - the TU offers to give your request for housing to Duwo, the student housing company and claims 250 € for it. If you go via a rental agency (called makelaardij over here), it costs you at least the same amount.

How much does it cost to live in Delft?

A lot - 400-500€ for a room and shared facilities and over 600€ for your own apartment/studio.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

It is, if you know German and/or English. There are language courses at the university. They are very good but also very time-consuming as you are expected to prepare for every course lesson.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Delft from your city?

Railway - direct trains Berlin-Amsterdam and then change for the Intercity to Delft.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Delft?

  • Buenos Aires;
  • Walletje;
  • Beans and Bagels.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

  • Museumsnight ("Museumsnacht") in October;
  • Light festival in December.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Delft in the future?

  1. It is very difficult to find a room just via internet - your future room mates want to see you;
  2. Start with your search for a room around 1-2 months before moving there;
  3. There are a lot of Facebook groups that are helpful (for Erasmus students, for international students, for housing, for selling and buying second hand furniture... );
  4. Don-t get frustrated when you try to speak Dutch and people answer in English.
