My Erasmus experience in Zaragoza, Spain by Léo
Why did you choose to go to Zaragoza, Spain?
I wanted to go to a city in Spain that wasn't heavily influenced by tourists so that I could immerse myself in the culture and language. I also didn't want to go to a big city like Madrid.
How long did you stay in Zaragoza? How much funding did you receive?
Six months.
What is student life like in Zaragoza?
There are lots of Erasmus students; so many that you might only meet someone for the first time in December. It's a bit harder to meet Spanish students but definitely not impossible.
Would you recommend the city and university of Zaragoza to other students?
Yes.
What is the food like?
The food is good but be prepared to eat your evening meal a lot later than normal. You should also forget about having a substantial meal in the evening and get used to the idea of tapas.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Zaragoza?
Not really. Thanks to the website Easypiso, it was really easy. (There is also a Facebook page 'Erasmus Zaragoza' and the Erasmus website to help you).
What is the cost of living like?
Spain is cheaper than France, in particular the supermarkets and going out at night... When it comes to buying clothes and other things it can sometimes be more expensive, especially in the city centre.
How did you find learning the language? Did you take any classes organised by the university?
The university organised language classes in summer, September (in preparation for the semester start in October) and throughout the year. You can learn the language quickly. The danger is that you'll spend lots of time speaking English with other Erasmus students.
What is the cheapest way of getting to Zaragoza from your home?
From Niort, the easiest way is by bus or car-share. These are also the quickest ways of getting here apart from by plane.
Where do you recommend going out in Zaragoza?
The area 'Magdalena' on a Tuesday (2€ a beer and tapas in all of the bars in the area) and the Casco Antiguo area where you can go to Le Manolo, La Cucaracha, L'Espit Chupitos... and many more! (L'ESN will show you the way, don't worry! )
And for eating out in Zaragoza? What are your favourite places?
In La Magdalena area, the tapas are amazing in almost all the bars... we hardly ever went to bars that offered full meals.
And how about cultural visits?
La Pilar is a must! I would also encourage you to visit the surrounding region; Aragon is a beautiful region, especially the northern part in the Pyrenees.
