Erasmus Experience in Zaragoza, Spain by Adriano
Why did you choose to go to Zaragoza, Spain?
To be honest, it has been an incidental occurrence. When I applied to the Erasmus program, Zaragoza was not my first choice.
How long is the Erasmus scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I've spent 6 months in Zaragoza and I received 1000€ from the region Pays de la Loire (France).
What is the student lifestyle like in Zaragoza?
Actually, I lived in the city center, so close to the University of Zaragoza... but, unfortunately, I didn't study there. My university was the Universidad San Jorge (USJ), which was not in the city center. Not even in the city of Zaragoza. So, I had to take the bus every morning to get there. Anyway, I don't regret my choice. It was all worth it in the end, the lectures were good and teachers very helpful. But, if you can choose the university in the city center it would be even better for your everyday life.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Zaragoza to other students?
Definitely! The city of Zaragoza is very good for Erasmus students for many reasons. Firstly, the cost of living and housing are cheaper than other Spanish cities like Barcelona or Madrid. Secondly, the city is big enough to find anything and go anywhere by foot. It's less alienating than bigger cities are, and I consider this a relevant quality. Finally, the third reason is that the city is almost equidistant from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia and this is very good to travel in Spain.
What is the food like?
If you like tapas, you can find them anywhere. They're great! I advise you 100 Montaditos or Lizarran which are excellent, even if they are restaurant chains.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Zaragoza?
Not really, I easily found my flat in one of the many announcements that can be found everywhere in the University of Zaragoza, then I looked for people to share the flat with.
How much does it cost to live in Zaragoza?
The cost of living in Zaragoza is not very high. Of course, it all depends on how you spend money, but you can easily find a pint of beer in a bar for 2. 50€ and, as I said earlier, prices for housing are very cheap. Prices in supermarkets are similar to those of other countries, so, not very cheap.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
I took some Spanish courses when I arrived and they've been very helpful, as I didn't speak Spanish at all.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Zaragoza from your city?
It really depends on where you come from. I come from the south of France so, for me, the cheapest way was to take an Eurolines bus (approximately 60€). Many of my friends took a flight from their cities to Barcelona and then a bus or train to Zaragoza.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Zaragoza?
Mile End or The Point for clubbing and the Chupiteria to have some shots. You can also try Manolo la Nuit or la Cucaracha in the Casco (Historical city center).
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Zaragoza?
See answer to question n. 5.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The castle Aljaferia and the historical city center characterised by narrow winding streets.
