Experience in Zadar, Croatia by Valentina
What is it like to live in Zadar? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's great! I am not originally from Zadar but from the north of the country so to live on the coast for 5 years is just perfect. I would definitely recommend it to everyone who is thinking about coming here. The city is not too big which means you can go by foot almost anywhere, except for some beaches and neighborhoods. The old town/the center is very beautiful, with stone paved streets and alleys, a beautiful seafront/boardwalk and famous city attractions (Sea organ and Greeting to the sun).
What is the student lifestyle like in Zadar?
There are many students in Zadar and most of them are not from here. Student lifestyle is very good, at least for me. Students mostly live in shared flats, during the day drink coffee in some of the many bars and in the evening they get together either in someone's flat or outside, next to the university or next to the beach, drinking a bit, singing, hanging out. There are a couple of places to go out, just 3-4 clubs, the rest are bars that are open till 1 or 2 am. Usually students don't go out before midnight.
How much does it cost to live in Zadar?
For a normal life, without excessive expenses, I would say around 2-3 000 HRK (around 400 euros).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Zadar? Is there any advice you can give?
It is not difficult, there are many ads about the flats, either on the boards at the university or on the internet, there is also many ads in the facebook group of University of Zadar. It is possible to get the dormitory as well, although the dormitory is quite small and there is always a lot of people trying to get it.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is great, you can find all kinds of restaurants around here, most of them have fish specialties. Well, my favorite dishes would be chicken in any way and fast food of any kind, especially pizza. The price of the food ranges from normal to quite expensive, especially in fancy restaurants. But in general, it is not too expensive.
What places would you recommend visiting in Zadar?
I would definitely recommend to see the Sea organ, Greeting to the sun, Museum of Ancient Glass, Zadar City Gate, Cathedral of St. Anastasia, Church of St. Donat, the Forum, City Sentinel, Square of Five Wells, Archeological Museum and of course some of the nearby islands (Ugljan, Iž etc). Very close is the national park Krka waterfalls which is very beautiful.
Is it good to eat out in Zadar? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
As I said, the food is excellent, and when it comes to restaurants, I like Bruschetta restaurant, 2 Ribara (2 Fishermen), Šime restaurant (not in the center).
Is the nightlife good in Zadar? Where is good to go?
It is good, except for the fact that there are not many clubs. Good bars are the Kult, Kutić, Arkada, Down Town, the Factory, Vip bar, Đina, Frenky, and clubs - Maraschino bar, Hitch bar, Yachting, Q bar, Forum.
What advice would you give future students heading to Zadar?
Enjoy the weather, the sun, the sea, have fun.
