Erasmus Experience in York, the United Kingdom by Zabia
Why did you choose to go to York, the United Kingdom?
I wanted to improve my English because it's a language you can communicate all over the world with and it's convenient to be able to organise your day to day life with the other foreign flatmates and was so even at the beginning of my Erasmus year.
How long is your stay for? How much aid do you receive?
I am staying for the university year; from September until January.
How is student life in York?
Great atmosphere. There are numerous bars and clubs. There are also numerous cultural places: museums, ruins, several churches, ghost tours in order to discover the city... Several nights out are also organised at the university and when you're foreign, many activities are planned in order to meet internationals (language cafes, Erasmus society... ).
Would you recommend the city and the university of York to other students?
100%. It's a young and dynamic city; loaded with history, very pleasant and on a human-scale.
How is the country's food?
Very far from the cliches about English gastronomy, there are some very good restaurants, especially in the city of York: from the pubs to international restaurants.
Did you have any difficulties in finding accommodation in York?
Not really. There is accommodation on campus, in a student hall or in a flat share in the city centre but it's best to get something a few months before freshers.
How are living costs in York?
Higher than France like everywhere in the United Kingdom but it's still reasonable.
How is the learning of the language? Did you go to any language courses organised by the university?
Learning the language is a bit difficult to begin with but if you make the effort to speak primarily in English, it's quickly done.
What is the most economical way of getting to York from your city?
In general from France, it's best to catch a plane to Manchester or Leeds and then catch a train to York.
Which places would you recommend to go out to party in York?
The city's numerous clubs (Kuda, Fibbers, Mansion... ) or the dancing bars (Bora-bora... ).
And to eat in York? What are your favourite places?
There are several restaurants but my favourite places at the moment are the numerous cafes, the Indian restaurant Mumbai Lounge on Fossgate and Ambiente Tapas on the same road.
And what cultural visits do you advice?
The visit of the cathedral, York Minster, the museums, the Ouse river banks and simply wandering around the city in order to appreciate its traditional characteristics.
York Minster
Any advice to give to future students in York?
Be open to anything; to the unknown. You are going to experience a unique year so throw yourself into the adventure and enjoy it!
