Discover Traditional Snack Food in Central Java
Javanese people, especially in Central Java, tend to have a meal that tastes sweet. If you're about to plan your trip to Yogyakarta or somewhere major cities in Central Java such as Solo, Semarang, etc, then be prepared to experience various kinds of meals that different from another region outside Java which usually tastes savory and salty.
When it comes to their snacks, they have hundreds of varieties of traditional snacks that I don't even remember the name each of them.
But these following snacks are the most popular that I can note:
- Bakpia: is a small, round-shaped Chinese-influenced Indonesian sweet rolls. Usually, they put a green bean as the filling, but today there are so many variations of filling.
- Geplak: is also a legendary snack from Yogyakarta that is made from coconut, sugar, and food coloring with aromatic essence. This snack is super sweet, please mind your teeth.
- Yangko: is an old traditional snack from Yogyakarta. Made from glutinous rice flour with a sweet peanut butter filling. It is more like a Japanese mochi cake but has a rectangle shape.
- Gula Kacang: as the name itself already explained, gula means sugar, and kacang is a peanut. Gula kacang made from Javanese sugar or known as Brown Sugar combined with peanut. It is like a dried caramel filled with peanuts.
