My Erasmus Experience in Wroclaw, Poland. By Vasco

Why choose to go to Wroclaw, Poland?

First of all, I wanted to stay somewhere snowy, seriously! Secondly, I wanted a city that has an interesting history and architecture. Thirdly, it was important for me to stay somewhere with the possibility to visit other cities and countries easily.

How long does the grant last? How much money do you receive for help?

5 months. I received €1060.

What is the student life like in Wroclaw?

It's good. Wroclaw is seen as an academic city. However, our classes were included in the 'English Division', so we weren't so involved in the real academic side of Wroclaw.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Wroclaw to other students?

Yes! The 'English Division' that welcomed us ran very well, the city has surprisingly interesting tourist points, and has great opportunities for travel.

How about the country's food?

I didn't really like the traditional food! There is also a much smaller supply of fish than in Portugal. Otherwise, it was all right.

How easily did you find accommodation in Wroclaw?

I went with accommodation in the University Residence. I looked for an apartment outside but I gave up because there were few reasonably priced options and it was difficult to communicate with the landlords. It takes a lot of time to look, at least for apartments.

About € 250 per month, including rent and excluding travel.

Yes, I did. The language is complex and very different from Portuguese! I learned the basics but it takes previous intensive course to be able to maintain a banal dialogue.

What is the most economical way to get to Wroclaw from your city?

At the time it was to fly to Lufthansa Port-Wroclaw.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Wroclaw?

Firstly, I would spend some time in the Rynek cafés and bars. Then there are a variety of nightclubs and lively bars around Rynek. In short: Rynek and nearby!

And eating in Wroclaw? Can you name your favorite places?

For main meals: Kurna Chata.

For Coffee, snacks and great hot chocolate: Literatka.

Hala Stulecia and its gardens, the Panorama, the Cathedral Island, Rynek - with the surrounding cathedrals and the fantastic historic town hall of Wroclaw - the Opera and Botanical Garden.

Do you have any advice that you would like to give future students in Wroclaw?

Be careful at night, there are frequent problems with violence. Take advantage of the fantastic prices of train and bus tickets to other polish cities and to surrounding countries!
