Juan José in Poland: My Wroclaw Experience
What is it like to live in Wroclaw? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I highly recommend it, especially to anyone who likes the cold, or at least prefers it to the heat. It's an incredible city with loads of things to do and slap bang in the middle of Europe so it's easy and cheap to visit the rest of the continent.
What is the student lifestyle like in Wroclaw?
It couldn't get any better, of all the cities in Poland I've been to, Wroclaw is without a doubt the one with the most students, you can tell just by looking around, at any time of day. Very much a student city.
How much does it cost to live in Wroclaw?
A month of living well and travelling around, you could spend between 500 and 600 euros. Living well and not travelling you'll fork out about 300 to 400 euros and for your average standard of living you'll pay between 200 and 300 euros. The truth is, it's a really cheap country, let alone city.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Wroclaw? Is there any advice you can give?
Not at all, between my university at home and the one here, I had everything sorted out. But of course, you have to know what you're doing and do things well in advance.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food isn't bad at all, despite the lack of fish and grilled food. Almost everything is either fried or battered. But there is a big variety of dishes and you won't find anything completely weird.
What places would you recommend visiting in Wroclaw?
Rynek, all the churches, all the parks, Odra...
Is it good to eat out in Wroclaw? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Pierogrania if you want to try Poland's most famous dish, Pierogis. But in general, most places are really good.
Is the nightlife good in Wroclaw? Where is good to go?
It's easy to work out when you get here. By the end of the first day you'll know the best places to be, and when to be there.
What advice would you give future students heading to Wroclaw?
If you have the chance to go, don't hesitate. Wroclaw isn't a small Soviet city at all, it's an enormous place, with fantastic public transport, great infrastructure and is by no means inferior to any city in Spain.
To all the Spanish guys going though, make sure you're careful at night, the Polish boys don't take too kindly to their Spanish counterparts and will look for any excuse to start a fight. Stay away from these kind of people, especially the drunk ones, and you'll be fine.
