Erasmus Experience in Wroclaw, Poland by Marta
Why did you choose to go to Wroclaw, Poland?
I move there just for work. There are a lot of opportunities for foreigners, companies that are looking for multilingual people.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I'm living here since February 2017.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Wroclaw to other students?
The city is famous to be the one in Europe with more bridges, and it's true that you can find lots of them, bigs and smalls, what it makes the town very beautiful.
The local people can be a little bit cold at the beginning, more if they are not use to go abroad. But every time Wroclaw it´s being more international and young local people is much more nice.
What is the food like?
The traditional food is based basically all of the dishes with meat and a lot of soups. But nowadays you can find international food everywhere and for vegetarian people like me we have a lot of options as well in almost all restaurants.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Wroclaw?
No, there are some sites where you can find rooms and flats like olx.pl or gumtree.pl as well as trough some groups of Facebook.
How much does it cost to live in Wroclaw?
You can spend a big range difference of money depending on your lifestyle and the area where you are living. You can find rooms from 500 pln to 1300 pln. And for flats from 1800 pln to 3000 pln depending on the location and how big is.
The food in the supermarket is super cheap, I spend around 60 pln per week in food and if you go to the restaurant the dish will be between 15-30 pln normally.
And the most important think for erasmus, the alcohol is the cheapest i've found since now. Soplica is the Polish Vodka brand and a 1L bottle costs 20 pln. In the club you can buy the typical cubata for 5-10 pln.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The polish language is very difficult. Since I´ve arrived I only learned some basic words, but if you have the opportunity to have a language course I recommend it to you as in some places like supermarkets they don't speak English.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Wroclaw from your city?
Some months ago we had a direct flight with Ryanair from Girona, a 1h airport from Barcelona. But this one is not operating more I don't know if because of the seasonality or forever.
So now the other option is the Polish airline Lot doing a stop in Warsaw or with Lufthansa doing stop in Munich or Frankfurt.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Wroclaw?
My favorite clubs are La Casa de la Musica and Czarny Kot with latino music.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Wroclaw?
The most traditional restaurants are Pierogarnia, where you can eat the famous Pierogis cooked in different styles, or Kurna Chata with typical Polish dishes.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Opera or the Theatre.
