Erasmus Experience in Wroclaw, Poland by Jaakko
Why did you choose to go to Wroclaw, Polonia?
I wanted to have an unique life experience and go to the place which is totally different than Finland. On the other hand, I wanted to travel and see Europe, so Wroclaw was a great place for these things.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Scholarship is 5 months, I get 310€ per month from Erasmus and then I also receive Finnish student help.
What is the student lifestyle like in Wroclaw?
You go to school, you eat, visit your friends and party. Student lifestyle is the same in every country if you ask me.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Wroclaw to other students?
I was in a different university so I can't say anything about that. But the city is okay and living is quite cheap here. It's a lovely city and it has many sides. One day it's the nicest city you have ever been to and next day it's quite boring.
What is the food like?
Polish food is greasy but there are a lot of different restaurants if you don't want to eat Polish food. Polish food isn't the best food you will eat but it's basic food and not that bad.
Was it difficult to find your accommodation in Wroclaw?
We lived for a month in a monastery and one week in our school's dormitory. After that we found are room via erasmusu.com and it didn't cost us anything.
How much does it cost to live in Wroclaw?
200-500 euros per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It's a very difficult language and I can't speak or understand it. There are language courses at every university if you want to learn. Elderly people don't speak English here but young adults speak quite good English.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Wroclaw from your city?
By plane via Helsinki and Copenhagen. It will take at least 7 hours.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Wroclaw?
Wall street and Mundo 71 are the best clubs.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Wroclaw?
You have to try Pasibus restaurant if you fancy a great burger.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Sky Tower is really cool place to visit and Rynek (the main square) of course.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Wroclaw in the future?
Just be open minded.
