Erasmus Experience in Wroclaw, Poland by Gabi

Why did you choose to go to Wroclaw, Poland?

For no reason in particular, it was one of the first destinations I picked and that's where I went.

How long did the grant last? How much financial aid did you get?

Mine lasted for 5 months, for the End-of-degree project. If I remember correctly, I got €150 a month.

What is the student lifestyle like in Wroclaw?

In general, it's good, but the Erasmus lifestyle is more about going out, getting to know the city, its customs, partying, etc.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Wroclaw to other students?

Without a doubt.

What is the food like there?

It's good and there is a lot of variety, the prices are really affordable, but don't worry, they have McDonald's there, too.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Wroclaw?

No, the university assigned me a room in a residence in the beginning, I stayed there for a month. Then some of us decided to look for a flat to rent, we got in touch with an estate agent in the city to find one and within a few weeks we were in our student flat.

How much does it cost to live in Wroclaw?

It's relatively cheap, it depends on how much you want to spend like in any place really. But the food and drinks are especially cheap and so are things like alcohol and tobacco. Clothes, household goods, etc. cost pretty much the same as they do in Spain.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

I went on an intensive 3 week course in my home city before I left, so I had some idea. When you're there the language is fine, in the beginning you have to really come out of your shell, but you realise that all of the Spanish people there are at more or less the same level (which is much lower that the other Erasmus students from different countries).

What is the easiest way to get to Wroclaw from your home city?

Fly there directly with Ryanair from Alicante.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Wroclaw?

There are loads of places to go, we usually went to the same places, but that can get boring.

Grawitacja, No Name, Daytona, Niebo, etc.

And to eat in Wroclaw? What are some of your favourite places to go?

Again, there are loads of places to go to and get great food for really cheap. Honestly, I don't remember any names, but you can find dozens of them at Rynek square. They're all really good!

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

It's really good for cultural visits, there are loads of things to explore. And if you get the chance to visit Poland, Krakow and Warsaw are great places to lose yourself in, and the Auschwitz concentration camp is a very interesting place, it's pure recent history.

Do you have any advice for future students in Wroclaw?

Enjoy your stay, go out and live your live. Get to know a lot of people from other countries. Feel how it feels to live in another city, it's definitely very interesting, but don't forget about your studies, and that they are what you're really there for.
