Erasmus Experience in Wroclaw, Poland

Why did you choose to go to Wroclaw, Poland?

Because it's a beautiful city, in terms of costs with the euro it's cheaper, and because going to a country with a different language and culture from ours is very interesting.

How long does the grant last? How much money do you get for help?

I only received mine at the end of Erasmus... I only did one semester and I got a grant of one thousand euros.

What's the student environment like in Wroclaw?

The atmosphere is brutal... every night parties in various bars, discos in the city... it's fun that never ends. The classes especially for Erasmus students are in English, and are reserved for Erasmus students. Beyond this, the student staff are cool and handle everything well.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Wroclaw to other students?

Obviously!

What's the country's food like?

The food isn't great... the city is close to Germany, so it suffered German dominance during the second world war and these roots stayed... there is a lot of charcuterie, lots of stuffed things but it hasn't nothing to do with the Portuguese ones.

How did you find accommodation?

I researched on the Internet and afterwards I spoke to the Erasmus organiser there... we stayed in a residence that's mixed but it's still brutal... SPARTAKUS!

How are accommodation prices? And prices in general?

Everything is a lot cheaper. This was, without doubt, one of the principal factors for going there.

What's the language like? Did you attend a language course at the university?

It's Polish... it's very strange but after being there are bit you get used to it and you even start to like it and learn it... I attended a course at the university, yes, but I only went for a week before giving up.

What is the cheapest way to get to Wroclaw from your city?

Plane... although I took a plane to the Czech Republic and then a train to Wroclaw.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Wroclaw?

Well there are so many... it's impossible to say all of them... and more importantly to write them down correctly... but Grawitacja, Metropolis, Insomnia.... and without doubt when we went to Juwenalia, during fresher's week. There was a pyjama party in the disco at the Spartakus residence.

And eating out in Wroclaw? Can you name your favourite places?

Hmm... go to the shopping centres and there is lots of variety there... and there's always a McDonalds.

And in terms of cultural visits?

Again there is a lot to choose from... amongst them all the different churches.

Do you have any advice you'd like to give future students in Wroclaw?

Go and enjoy yourself... it's the best place for Erasmus students, with no stress.
